Has to be at circuit city (gift card), a sony (have plethora of sms).
So far i'm looking at the DSC-T50 & the new DSC-W200.
Anyone care to chime in? 9/10/2007 7:48:43 PM |

What is your price range? Does it have to be slim/compact?
I've really taken a liking to the Sony DSC-H7. it's a little more expensive than the w200, but it's 8.1MP paired with great ISO/focus capability and a longer-zooming lens.

I'm interested in this too.. My last few cameras have been canon's..and while they've held up pretty well, the images I've seen out of some sony's lately has caught my eye. The colors just look a lot more realistic to me for some reason. That, and the fact my last canon went thru the washing machine after only one night of use

Do yourself a favor and take pics with a Sony camera before pulling the trigger.
I find the image quality bad for my tastes. I'm a diehard Canon P&S fan, just can't get into Sony's P&S cams. 9/11/2007 7:30:24 AM |

looking to spend $400 or less. & yes, it has to be slim/compact.
The only thing holding me back on the dsc-w200 is that all the T series cameras let you zoom in & out while recording video. with the rest you have to zoom appropriately, hit record & then you're locked in.
sony's image quality has been just find on my last few cameras, i'm sticking with them.9/11/2007 8:35:19 AM |

I am buying a P&S digicam as a gift for someone. I am used to Sony, and I really like my Sony DSC-P43.
I saw the following today:
W55 W80 W90 W200 T2 (4 GB internal memory!!!) T20 T70 T100 T200 H3
I do not want a touch screen, so that leaves:
W55 ($227) W80 ($266) W90 ($320) W200 ($400) T20 ($373) H3 ($320)
I loved the H3 (10x zoom), but it is quite bulky, and I know she would love a compact one.
Problem is, all the compact ones by Sony come with 3x zoom only, except for the T200, which comes with 5x zoom, but is a touch screen.
How come Panasonic and Kodak are able to make 6x zoom and 10x zoom in their compacts? Should I look at Panasonic and ditch Sony, or still go with Sony, even though I can only get 3x zoom?
If I go with Sony, I would get the W80.
What about the S series by Sony... how are they different from the W series? S650, S700, S800, etc. S800 comes with 6x zoom, but the shop didn't carry it. 12/7/2007 5:01:15 PM |

i like the Canon a630. plus, you can add features (motion detection, new shutter speeds, new aperature sizes, histogram, intervalometer, etc. ) by using the CHDK firmware hack. but that's just me 12/7/2007 6:18:27 PM |

most of my experience is with panasonic's lumix line, and i absolutely love them...the leica lenses are really nice, easily on par with sony's zeiss lenses (imo)...also, i like panasonic navigation better 12/8/2007 6:03:17 PM |

Not sure if its still there, but best buy had the Canon sd1000 on sale for 179 (hopefully my mominlaw got it for me). I really like the canon sd500 I had once, until it was recently lost/stolen 12/8/2007 8:15:58 PM |

Stop your bitchin' OEP. Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind with all your parameters. Sony. Compact. Non-touch screen. Just go with the w55 and save some $. If you go with the w200, you're just paying a huge markup for 12MP, which you're never going to use anyways if you're like 95% of consumers.
For those who don't care about the brand, check out the Pentax Optio z10 or the Nikon S51.
They're both compact, and 8MP.
The Nikon is very sleek, made of metal, has a great Vibration Reduction feature, and has a huge 3" screen. It's only 3x zoom, but that's the standard for compact digicams. $200 at Wolf.
The Pentax is also compact, has the easiest menu system I've ever seen in a digicam, and has a 7x optical zoom...much more than anything that compact. $250. 12/9/2007 10:46:48 AM |

i hate sony. their proprietary memory sticks are a ripoff. and their batteries generally suck too.
Canon Exilim is a 7.2 Meg pixel for about $200 uses common SD flash and you can't beat the quality/price combination. 12/9/2007 7:41:02 PM |

heaven forbid you buy a 1gb memory stick pro duo hi-speed on ebay for <$10
also another reason to never go li-ion, you should always opt for the cameras that use AA's, my Sony uses Ni-MH AA's and perform's excellent with them. 12/9/2007 7:44:52 PM |

Don't get the super high end super slim sony camera DSC-T200. Unless they have updated the focus software, I have one and on a recent trip i was cropping and editing the pictures and i noticed that almost all the photos were slightly out of focus. However i think the lower models do not have this issue 12/9/2007 8:08:39 PM |

Canon SD870 IS should be on your short list. Look at its review on dpreview compared to its competitors, take it for a test drive. The wide-angle functionality will come in handy more than you realize. (*No, I don't own one, but I'm constantly wishing I did...) Either a new SD870, or a used SD700 or S80 (any of which have a wide-angle zoom), will be my next camera purchase, replacing my old S400 as the compact camera.

Those prices are ridiculous. I hope that's not $USD.
The W90 is great, but it should be around $230 iirc. It's what I've been recommending for the last 6 months or so and two of my close friends have bought them as a result. It's a great camera for the money.
The W200 is worth the price it commands as well IMO. I'll probably pick one up before the holidays. You should be able to get it at the big retailers (Circuit City, etc.) for around $350 though. Again, not sure where you're getting your prices.12/10/2007 10:50:01 AM |
