fuck that. Riddick was "the" center of the university in the olden days
something that was mentioned on Pack Pride: Take something from the Riddick Ruins and put that in the place of the tiny wolf statue in the Cave where the team runs out of before football games
im pretty sad to see that last of Riddick removed 9/13/2007 12:44:51 PM |

^^while i tend to agree, a parking deck is not making cool new history... unless ncsu forms a legendary go kart team that races to the top of the deck every saturday.
i think some part of it (like the fieldhouse) should stay.

I'm talking about athletics program. They have a new much better stadium which i'm sure no ones complaining about and would rather still be in Riddick. So its about time the team makes positive history and not negative history.
I guess i'm not used to the fact that 100 year old building is something to be impressed by.

As far as I know, the plans for Thompson include generally not fucking with the front part of the building, though I think they may add on to the back. I predict the finished product will resemble Leazar--nicely restored early 20th century building with an odd, quasi-futuristic addition that doesn't match.
At least with Leazar the additions are small and not visible from the front. 9/13/2007 10:25:54 PM |

dude, you don't have buildings old enough in NC to compete with the 'classy' parts of Europe, which is pretty much MOST of Europe. Lets not forget, the people that founded this country weren't exactly capable of building architecturally pleasing buildings, short of some of the bigger, older cities like St. Augustine.9/14/2007 1:25:00 AM |

The idea of reusing the building to house NC State's football history isn't a bad one. The house wouldn't actually have to be torn apart and rebuilt either, it could be moved intact (where's the civil engineers when you need them?) 9/14/2007 8:06:37 AM |

Riddick Stadium (opened 1907) was a former college football stadium, home to the North Carolina State University Wolfpack football team. The stadium was named after Wallace Carl Riddick, N.C. State football coach during the 1898-1899 seasons. The Wolfpack baseball team also played its home games in the stadium.
The stadium initially had only wooden bleachers on the sidelines, but over the years concrete bleachers were built and a fieldhouse was erected behind the south endzone. After the completion of Carter Stadium (now Carter-Finley Stadium) the east stands and the field were replaced by a parking lot and the fieldhouse was made into the campus police station. The west stands remained and served a number of functions through the years, including a residence hall in the 1940s and the home of the University Planning office until their demolition in the summer of 2005. The former fieldhouse is now empty as well. A new academic building is being constructed on the site.

now when they decided to build Carter Stadium, did they contemplate expanding riddick? I know it's in the middle of campus, but was that an option on the table? 9/14/2007 10:46:13 AM |

the article states riddick had issues and attendance was so low we tried to play our games on the road. expanding would have been ridiculous. 9/14/2007 1:16:38 PM |
richthofen All American 15758 Posts user info edit post |
^^The issue would have been where exactly to expand, and where to put the parking. I guess parking might not have been as much of an issue, since neither Derr track nor Talley existed at the time, but expanding the stadium to a decent (for the 60's) size probably would have required the demolition of Syme, the YMCA building, the Morris building, the Laundry building, and possibly the steam plant for there to be sufficient space. That's a LOT of collateral damage. 9/14/2007 1:27:57 PM |

SAVE THE HISTORIC BASEBALL FIELD! DON'T LET THESE CORRUPT ADMINISTRATORS TEAR IT DOWN TO BUILD SOME REDNECK RUGBY STADIUM! FOOTBALL'S JUST A PASSING FAD ANYWAY!
The photo is from 1910, by the way. After football caught on a few years later, a new set of wooden grand stands were built sometime before 1923(the outfield of the baseball field became riddick field). The first WPA project on campus was the construction of the north side concrete stadium in 1933, finishing with the field house in 1938.
After baseball was evicted, it moved to a field south of Thompson Gym(later Theater), where the colliseum parking deck sits today. I don't know when baseball moved to the field behind Lee dorm.

I have the utmost respect for buildings; I come from a family of architects. However, this building is a POS. It isn't pretty; it serves no purpose. Amazing, it lasted 100 years.
People here in the US think that buildings from the 1700s/1800s are "old" and are "historic". No they're not. THIS is old and worth saving....some stupid building that's 100 years old on a college campus shouldn't be saved just because "people played football there."

they're future buildings . . . notice the legend at the bottom right of it ?
I would say the huge one south of lee is supposed to be a large parking deck built on what is now the E lot. Or do you mean the one that is right next to the south end of Lee? In that case that would be the dining hall.
