I just put some Hawk HPS pads on the 540i. I've run em before and liked em a lot.

But whenever i apply some brake pressure, i get a CLACK CLACK CLACK. wtf. I took everything apart and redid. same thing. Everything is tight, spring clips are in place. The pads just seem a little loose and i think theyre clacking around in the carriers. wtf

Any way to fix this?

if you had another set of the same pads that were fine, off hand i would say there's a defect in one of the new pads.

have you replaced the clips? one of them could be trash too...

oh, i thought you meant you'd run them on that car before.

i had a set on a dsm that always make a very light ticking. i replaced everything short of the calipers themselves. it was only under partial/light input, they were fine if you were really into them. i finally just chalked it up to them chattering a bit due to the more aggressive compound.

i'd put some new clips on it if they've never been replaced.

comparing the backing plates is dead on also, there may be a slight size difference.

I replaced the rear pads and rotors on a 325i at work. The guy came back complaining of a knocking sound when he hit the brakes coming from the rear. He came back several times and every mechanic had eventually looked at it and we still couldn't figure it out. We took it apart several times and put it back together. Nothing. He said he would take it to a BMW mechanic and see if they could figure it out. He hasn't been back for that problem since.

Not much help, I know.

could be, didn't think about that. though you would think it would have shown with the old pads, but maybe not...

I had one rotor start clacking on my Vette. Tiny crack near the flange. Does it sound like it is clacking from one side or both sides? If you can isolate a side then switch sides and see if the noise moves with the rotors. While you have it apart examine the rotors very carefully. Or put the old rotors on and that will tell you if its the pads or the rotors.
