all of the old threads on this are either slightly off topic or horribly out of date

I'm considering buying a new sound card, and I'm looking for something relatively cheap but also fairly decent. Having RCA out (for hookup to a home entertainment system) is a big plus, but not required.

suggestions?

i just have a the one that came in my laptop and the straight pcm sounds delightful
i think its just built in to the mother board w/ realtek drivers. It uses an optical output

also this is connected to a $texas stereo so when i say delightful it means something... it doesn't mean it sounds great on some crap 7 channel pc speaker setup with 10% thd.

it sounds good enough to make me switch from my xbox to this as my hd-dvd player.

basically i'm saying... you don't need soundblaster and certainly don't need to spend that money

p.s. (my laptop is an asus g1s so if you want to look up the specs go for it but i need to head to work)

something you need to tell people is what o.s. you are running
some sound cards don't like vista.
