small problem. I was replacing a 1800 with a 2800 and I copied the encrypted password. for some reason I can't access it now. I'm locked out. i decrypted the password and it still doesn't work.
my Belkin console cable doesn't support the break key - so I bought a new one from radio shack. will password recovery solve my problem. I'd like to start from scratch reconfiguring this thing.

i'm confused. which avenue do you want to go? do you want to start from scratch and reconfigure the router from factory settings, or do you want to recover your password? 9/18/2007 6:49:47 PM |

why the fuck do you need a 2800.
i've done password recovery on those boxes like 100 times. u can load the box up bypassing the user settings by altering the configuration register in ROM monitor mode. you will then be able to bypass your password once you load IOS afterwhich you can set a new password. just make sure you then copy your running configuration to your startup config. After which you can restart the router and everything should be fine.
using this method will preserve all your other settings as long as you don't mistakenly erase your startup config.

There are loads of password recovery documents on cisco's website. Type password in the search and you should get what you need.
If you clear the password, then there should be no reason you can erase the running config and start from scratch. 9/19/2007 11:09:49 AM |

i'm in NYC working on this now. trouble was the cable. The Belkin console cable doesn't support the break key. had to get a Radio Shack one. funny Belkin doesn't state that.
anyhow. I swapped a 1800 for a 2800 and all interfaces are up/up, but no internet and I can't get phones to register to CallManager. trying to turn a remote office to CallManager. once I get the phones up on the 2800 i can configure the 4-fxo ports and make some minor adjustments.
any advice is welcome . . . 9/19/2007 3:59:15 PM |

get this:
so the config matches and all the interfaces are up. the only way I can reach the internet on the 2800 is if I change my DNS to a public DNS 4.2.2.2 - when using the assigned DNS i can't get on. something is defintely wrong here. going to upgrade the IOS on the 2800 now and hope that fixes the problem. 9/20/2007 12:02:38 AM |

I'm so fucked . . . getting an error message on my tftp server saying, "transmit error while sending . . . the connection is reset by remote side".

try to ping that tftp server address first. Looks like the file doesnt exist at the destination you specified, or you cant reach that destination...
Is that a local server at the same location as the 2800... ?
Also, I imagine that you can ping 4.2.2.2, telling me that your internet connectivity is fine. If you have an internal dns server at this same address, and internet access doesnt work when you use that as your dns server, then you need to look at your local dns server as the problem.
Also, when you say connectivity to the internet, are you talking about internal PCs or the router itself? 9/20/2007 12:54:17 AM |

Hmmmm ... As far as my ios upgrade attempt I can ping my laptop, which is the tftp server and I can also ping the rtr from my laptop too.
Not sure why I can't transfer the file.
But the problem with dns is freaky. I can't get it to work. I can ping 4.2.2.2 and if I change my laptop dns to 4222 I can get on the net. Something is fucked up. My phones can't register to the internets / callmanager. 9/20/2007 1:45:37 AM |

ok, so what dns address is not working as you are expecting it to?
Can you ping that dns server from the router? Is that dns server on the local network, or is it a public server like 4.2.2.2?
When you have it configured on the router, can you ping http://www.yahoo.com from the router (does the address resolve correctly) or is dns not working from there as well?
Also, for tftp, you need to ping it from the router itself; from your laptop is not a sufficient test.
