he's not rushing you, I think this is just a rough draft thread, which will be thrown away thursday, or whenever you make the official one.

so fans of [insert non-ncsu school here] can post to themselves about their game

Does anyone else think it pedantic that Gundy is talking about QB Bobby Reid as "a kid"? He's 3 months away from 22.

Anyway, I'll be in West Lafayette Saturday hopefully watching the Boilers put a hurting on the Irish.

Once your compensated for your play, be it with money or a scholarship, you're open to criticism, whether you're 18 or 24.

Quote :
"Congratulations to Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy (16), who showed he can be Bob Knight without the titles after his tantrum in response to a column by the Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson. In the Saturday paper, she questioned the toughness of quarterback Bobby Reid, who'd been benched by Gundy the previous week. Gundy responded by losing his mind after one of the few big victories in his 28-game career as a head coach, a shootout upset of Texas Tech.

On Monday, a completely unapologetic Gundy said it was "unfortunate" that his 3-minute, 20-second tirade took away from his team's victory. Of course, that was his fault, since he deemed trashing a reporter more important than acknowledging the Cowboys' performance.

Coaches have the right to take issue with journalists, and to do it in public. That's part of the job for a columnist to take what he/she dishes out. But this was such a shrill overreaction that the message was lost amid the screaming.

One of Gundy's big complaints was negative treatment of a "kid" who is not being paid to play the game. But coaches never object to the tens of thousands of fans fawning over that kid, the tutors arranged to help him maintain minimum eligibility standards, the training table meals he eats, the tricked-up locker room he changes in -- or the positive press most players receive most of the time. Hero worship is expected and encouraged; criticism is child abuse. It's quite the double standard.

(For the record, Reid is 21 years old. He was old enough to vote in the 2004 presidential election or to die in Iraq. But few people are afforded the means to grow up more slowly than major-college athletes.)

"Come after me!" Gundy bellowed directly at Carlson. "I'm a man! I'm 40!"

OK, if you insist. The Dash will go after Gundy.

The great orator said that the column in question was shown to him, "by a mother. A mother of children."

As opposed to a mother of walruses, presumably.

Gundy went on to say that 75 percent of the column was fabricated. He took issue with two points in the column. So maybe math isn't his specialty.

Anyway, The Dash hopes Gundy felt like a big man when it was over. Next time an ounce of professional decorum would be appreciated. Until then, try to worry more about improving that 13-15 career record that includes seven victories over Sun Belt and I-AA opposition.

(By the way: Gundy says he doesn't read the newspapers. It's The Dash's experience that the majority of coaches who say they don't read the newspapers are lying.)"

"Unless you're dealing with a Bobby Knight or Herm Edwards, you're going to get a lot of "110 percents," "One day at a times," and "We stuck to the game plans." Every once in a while, a John L. Smith will slap himself in the face, a Dennis Green will go nuts about crowns and asses, and a Jim Mora will use the word "diddly poo." Those will make the highlights, show up in Coors Light ads and get played on cheesy sports talk radio stations before commercial breaks.
Rarely do you get a postgame press conference that actually makes you think; one that moves you; one that gets you to stand up and applaud.

In my time, I've never come across a postgame press conference speech as well delivered, as passionate and as effective as the one Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy delivered following his team's heroic 49-45 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday. Gundy used props (a newspaper), a militant stare down and some "George C. Scott in Patton" public speaking skills in what has to be the press conference of the year.

Gundy was outraged by what he referred to as an "inaccurate" article by columnist Jenni Carlson in Saturday's Oklahoman. Carlson's piece more or less pointed to current Oklahoma State backup quarterback Bobby Reid as a malcontent with an attitude, questioning the kid's desire and heart. Carlson cited quotes Reid gave another Oklahoman writer about being nervous before games and noted that he was caught on camera laughing on the sidelines during a blowout loss earlier this season. She then suggested that a minor injury in a recent game with FAU "might have been the thing that pushed Cowboy coaches over the edge" The line that burned, though, was this: "The bottom line: The switch is less about Robinson's play and more about Reid's attitude."

True or not, it struck a chord with the head coach.

Gundy -- who claimed in the rant that he doesn't read newspapers -- read this particular article. He then spent the majority of Saturday's press conference -- one that should have been a glorious celebration of a magnificent offensive team effort -- offering one of the more passionate, goosebump-worthy speeches you'll ever see a coach deliver.

Some highlights? Here are just a few:

"Let me tell you about this article: 3/4ths of this is inaccurate. It's fiction."

"This article embarrasses me to be involved in athletics."

"Here's all that kid did: Goes to class, is respectful to the media, respectful to the public, and he's a good kid. He's not a professional athlete. He doesn't deserve to be kicked when he's down."

"If you have a child someday, you'll understand how it feels. But you obviously don't have a child. I do."

Poll

"You don't downgrade him because he does everything right, and may not play as well on Saturday."

"That's why I don't read the newspaper -- because it's garbage. And the editor that let it come out, is garbage."

"Where are we at in society today? Come after me! I'm a man. I'm 40. Write about me!"

"So get your facts straight."
How's he close it? The real kicker that gives you the goosebumps? The one that a Tommy Lee Jones or a Mark Harmon would give in the closing scene of a Hollywood summer blockbuster about the 2007 Oklahoma State Cowboys?

"And that's all I've got to say. Makes me want to puke."

I don't have children. But if Mike Gundy's still coaching college football 25 or 30 years from now, and I have a moderately athletic son, I want him to play college football for this man.

The bloggers are describing the speech as a "meltdown," others note that Gundy went "insane." Some just say he handled the situation unprofessionally.

I think just the opposite. Gundy took a stand and defended one of his amateur athletes. He did so publicly.

This wasn't a "breakdown."

This, folks, was a decent man doing what any college coach should do if/when one of his players is attacked.

And this speech? Well, it was an act worthy of applause.

I really don't think he did...If the article was actually that inaccurate I think he did the right thing. A major newspaper reports inaccurate information about a player's character should be corrected. I like what Gundy did, shows he really cares about his players, and not just the stars...but that if you play for him and are a good person he's going to treat you with respect and have your back, regardless of your skill level. I think it shows a lot about him as a coach and as a person that he recognizes the importance of life off the field.

Gundy attacked a speculative media article that was demoralizing to one of his players...

maybe he went a little overboard with it, but i certainly understand and respect his point of view on the situation.

it wasn't a meltdown, it was him lashing out against unfair criticism of his player.

^^ What was inaccurate in the article? I didn't read anything that could be considered false except maybe the writer's contention that Reid was replaced at QB because of his attitude.

And considering how journalists work, they work off sources that remain anonymous, an assistant might've told her that.

What the writer did is no different than all the lampooning we did, the Technician did, the Charlotte Observer did, and the News & Observer did to any NC State quarterback that has started since 2004. The only difference is that maybe Amato and O'Brien told the QBs that once you step into the spotlight it's only natural you're going to receive criticism, and that if you can't take it maybe you should re-examine your position. It's part of growing up, the world's not Candy Land. And this QB is 21 yrs and 9 months old. He's old enough to drink, have sex, vote, enlist, have a child of his own, etc. He should be grown up by now.

If you are the Oklahoma State head coach (Gundy), would you start a person that cried to his mother (this is what Gundy said Reid had done) against your rival Oklahoma at Oklahoma? If he can't take a little criticism from a junior writer in a regional newspaper, how can he be expected to play with confidence with the vitriol coming at him from Sooner fans?

If by "lost" you mean "carried by to a much wider audience."

Well if he hadn't been as vocal about the criticisms no one would be hearing about this. He got a lot of views and coverage because he was obnoxious, and because of that it's as if he were speaking to all media that covers college athletics, not just one woman.

And because of carrying it to a wider audience, more people have read the writer's suggestion that the QB is a man and still sucking on his mother's tit.

^^
And the average sports fan is going to perceive such suggestions as typical yellow journalism that is rampant today. Here in 2007, most people have far more skepticism of what they see and read in the media than they did 20 years ago. As an outsider to OkSt. football, after reading the article and watching the rant, I tend to believe that this cunt of a writer distorted what is a kid who has a strong relationship to his mother into what she made it out to be. Ultimately, whatever the case may be, unless the kid is doing something illegal there's no reason for a newspaper to deride him for being close to his mother. If they want to criticize his play on the field fine. If he gets a DUI, yeah, write about that. but seriously, what the fuck kind of weak garbage is that?

^ ok she gets a pass.

^^ All due respect, you are comparing apples and oranges.

Mitch Mustain, his high school coach, and his family threw Coach Nutt under the bus. Mitch Mustain expected everything to be handed to him on a silver platter because he was some "All-World" quarterback on the high school level. Mustain didn't produce (according to Arkansas coaches) and didn't mesh with Nutt's system. As a result, Mitch and his family lashed out at Houston Nutt.

In this case, a coach is protecting his player from the media. As ridiculous and ineloquent as Gundy's rant was- he was still right for speaking out.

On another note...

Big game tonight WVU vs. USF. Last time these teams met Slaton was held to 60 yds rushing, White turned it over 3 times, and USF's George Selvie had a field day.

I wouldn't expect quite the same thing to happen this time, I think WVU was caught a little unprepared and off-guard last season which shouldn't be the case this time around. The added offensive weapon in Noel Devine should help. However, if the Mountaineer D can't get pressure on Grothe, he will be able to tear up the secondary.

High scoring affair:

WVU - 35
USF - 28
