So when my mom had my sister she wasn't positive on the stick until her 5th month and I happen to be fairly late. I just finished school to the health center is of no use to me.

Is there anywhere I can go where this blood test will not be 150+60ish.

Do you have health insurance?

If so, then 'm sure that's covered. Make an appointment with a primary care provider

I do not have health insurance.

I do not mind the idea of a child. I am engaged. I would just elope and have discussed this as much with my fiance. Planned Parenthood does urine tests.

I will just go to Urgent Care tomorrow. It is 200.

^^^Did they absolutely refuse to do a blood test, or did you just ask what they did?

Seems like they'd do a blood test if you ask for it specifically.

That's going to be a monster chunk of change out of your savings if you're not covered. Most insurance companies won't pay for the delivery if you're already pregnant at the time you apply for a policy.

I am not exactly sure why you are opposed to OTC (over the counter) tests purchased at the pharmacy or a simple urine test (Can be performed at any free clinic.) Everyone is different! Pregnancy is determined by measuring the presence of hCG (a hormone released by the developing embryo/fetus) against a standard. It is incredibly unlikely that hCG levels are inperceivably high 5 months into a pregnancy. So your mom's case was uncommon.

When most women realize that they (could be) pregnant, they are generally 6-7 weeks post-last cycle at which point hormones are raging (literally) and simple pregnancy tests fare well in terms of accuracy.

The reason why blood tests are expensive (often used after easier alternatives) is because there are a series of middle-men and expensive equipment involved in the analysis. After the blood is drawn, it may need to be sent out to a laboratory that can perform luminescent immunoassays. Then a lab technician needs to do the actual chemistry, enter the results, and send them back. This takes time (you might not get an answer back while you wait!) Urine tests are obviously much simpler and cheaper.

Another consideration, if you go to a free clinic an OB/GYN can visualize the pregnancy via ultrasound. Typically, the earliest you can start taking "baby pictures" is 5-6 weeks post-gestation.

You should certainly seek the advice of an obstetrician. You may find that there are a few around town who do discounts for non-insured patients and nice payment plans.

I bet OTC pregnancy tests are more accurate now than they were when your mom had your sister.

Have you even tried a home pregnancy test?

Home pregnancy tests are far more sensitive than they use to be. I wouldn't use your mom's case as justification for a blood test because not only is every individual different, every pregnancy is different.

When I was trying to conceive, I used the First Response Early Result test. It was so sensitive that I got a positive response 4 days BEFORE I even expected my period. And even before then, I was pretty sure that I was pregnant because I had an elevated basal body temperature (100.4 F) post-ovulation.

A lot of people forget that you're supposed to hold your pee for several hours before taking a HPT. That's why they recommend that you do it when you pee first thing in the morning. If you like chug some water and then go pee, you haven't given your body a chance to build up a hormone concentration in your urine.

To respond to a few of your questions.

Since I am a lot like my mom, I want to take a blood test. I took a urine test and it was negative. I went and paid for a blood test. I have talked it over and we are going to elope if this turns out to be the case and use the cash we saved up for our wedding to have the baby. I think the 25k will be enough to actually have the baby.

We can afford one. It is life's timing that is ultimately problematic. Family is all around and I know we will have emotional support. That is why I put it "idea of a child".

The biggest problem is that if I am not pregnant, it could be another problem and there is a lot of medical issues in the gynecology dept. (On my mom's side- my grandmother, 3 cousins, 5 aunts/great aunts have had their uterus removed before the age of 32- for cancer, growths, etc.)

^^ how can you not know millions of people in america are without health insurance with all of the news about it - hell even michael moore jumped on the bandwagon and made a movie that came out a few months ago

also lady bug you are an idiot for having a kid without health insurance - 25k will be gone way too soon without it - the fact that you can save 25k would lead me to believe that you can in fact afford health insurance but aren't paying for it but maybe that's a bad assumption

^I'm pretty sure that most health insurance plans include prenatal and delivery...once the baby is born you would probably have to add them for everything else...

however some plans (probably cheaper) might not include it

Here's a link to website if you can't get medicare and/or your health insurance doesn't cover pregnancy related expences

I remember maternity insurance being at least 2.5 times the cost of regular insurance.

If the baby's father has some kind of group insurance through his job, your marriage will likely count as a qualifying life changing event and your husband can then add you to his insurance. My prenatal care and delivery are all covered by our regular health insurance through my husband's job and it would have still covered all care from the coverage start date had I been pregnant prior to coverage. It's one of the nicer things about having a group plan over individual insurance.

Word, when was the last time you've seen a medical bill? Without health insurance you won't have any money to elope to the county courthouse

^That post would been so much cooler if she'd used "utes" as the plural of "uterus."

And 25k to have a baby with good prenatal care and all that? It can often costs hundreds of thousands of dollars altogether. That's why folks planning to have children get the insurance.

Of course, people without insurance who aren't exactly planning aren't the same people with hundreds of thousands of dollars laying around...so they'll work something out for you just like they do every other woman. So if you are pregnant, congrats on beating the system!!!

My wife's aunt went into labor while they were visiting from South Africa this past spring. They delivered at wakemed, and when they went to pay the bill, it was about $6k in all.

They were so surprised that someone was going to pay money out of pocket that they knocked about 60% off the "official bill"

so, that $25k might be enough. It's probably better to negotiate the cost after services are rendered.

^That's just delivery though.

That doesn't cover everything leading up to the delivery. I wouldn't hate on someone who wasn't concerned about prenatal care, but a lot of folks consider it a priority.

And if something goes really wrong, you could get into the million dollar range.

^The more I think about it, the tougher it is...

So many women in her family have had their utes removed, which makes me wonder if this is going to be a difficult (and thus expensive) pregnancy.

But that doesn't mean an abortion is the right choice. In fact, the prevalent nature of the issues with the reproductive system would make me not have an abortion. That could be your last pregnancy.

Anyway, I'm all up in some business I know nothing about. Sorry, folks.
