Hey, to TWW team/sys admins., or whoever it may concern:
You guys ever hear of a tecnology called Jabber? Its basically an XML based protocol for developing real-time communications and instant messaging. Jabber-based software is deployed on thousands of servers across the internet and is used by over a million people worldwide. I just found out about it the other day and so I don't know all the details of it, but it seems like its a very stable platform (Open Source of course). It might be worth a look into it if you guys are interested in supporting some realtime conversations instead of just message boards.
I can understand if you dont want to take on the hassel of reading into all this new stuff and implementing something that turns out to be a flop, and therefore, this is just a humble suggestion. There is an established http protocol for Jabber so all it would require would be to download someone's implementation (since its open source, there are a few good ones out there) or implement your own, and set up a server for some sort of cool web chat and from my understanding people could just come here and log on via http... or they can download an implementation themselves and run it like AIM or MSN Messenger and connect to a chat that way.
It sounds like the next step for chat clients in that (if i read it right) it has the ability to combine all of the independent communication services such as ICQ, IRC, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, et cetera, into one logical and user-friendly program. Please look up Jabber in your nearest search engine, I recommend Google.com. A few of the popular Windows based Jabber clients include WinJab, Exodus, JabberWana, myJabber. The definitive source online for Jabber stuff is http://www.jabbercentral.com/. Hope you find some good information and you consider a live web chat. 5/31/2002 10:21:43 PM |

My boyfriend is developing some jabber stuff for NCSU...don't ask me anything about it, he's the computer wiz...but I know he's working with Jabber A LOT. I love computer geeks! 6/2/2002 1:29:37 PM |

its ashame that they dont like the idea of open source, however just because they aren't into open source doesn't mean that it's out of the question... you can write a app. with this jabber stuff and compile it and never let anyone see the source, if you really wanted to, but doing it that way really slows down the process of finding bugs, and making improvements. It makes the project like a constant work in progress... which, in essence is what the wolf web is all about. 6/2/2002 3:54:24 PM |

we don't have a problem with open source. we just don't use any external code beyond what is included in standard libraries. this is a place where we have written everything you see. If I was on a project and had a bottom line to worry about, I would of course think about alternatives such as the ones you mention. however, with TWW, I don't have to report to anyone. if it is gonna get done, we'll do it ourselves 6/3/2002 3:37:48 AM |

I haven't actually seen it, but I still like the chatterbox better than Jabber. Or maybe that's because I haven't actually figured out / toyed with Jabber yet.

thanks CrazyJ... i did not know that you only used standardized libraries. and i can see from your point of view how that standpoint can really keep things running smoother in the long run. 6/3/2002 7:32:27 PM |

Non-topic... but i'd just like to post something for you super-champ 2000+ post people to think about, in particular ncsustash, who i'm guessing was referring to me with the "read up Newbie!" reply.
I've been a member of The Wolf Web for a long time, but because i dont feel the need to check the boards twice a day or every other day or every week even, and when i do, i dont feel the need to offer up my two cents unless ive got something i think someone else would be interested in reading... that leaves me as a "New Recruit". Alas, here i have wasted one of my cherished posts having to explain this.
(please note the sarcasm here...... and please resist the need to ream me a new one for being a dumbass newbie)
Also note that the first line of the original message was addressed to "TWW team/sys admins., or whoever it may concern"... but thanks anyway for your comments. 6/3/2002 7:46:50 PM |

I was merely pointing out the way that the Wolfweb is designed and that Jabber would not fit in the way that the Wolfweb is layed out 6/3/2002 8:58:30 PM |
