I'm presenting at a conference this weekend in Gettysburg, PA. According to googlemaps, I've got to to hit the 495 beltway at about 5pm Anybody got a better suggestion around DC?
Here's the suggested route.

it sounds weird, but with the time you would spend in traffic around the beltway, consider 40->77->81
ive done it before, nicer drive and will, if nothing else be a less stressful drive, even if it ends up not saving you much time... 10/5/2007 8:21:49 AM |

We were playing with that. Honestly I'd rather spend the time chilling in the car moving than either sitting in traffic or playing chicken at 80mph. 10/5/2007 8:24:56 AM |

im assuming you're coming from raleigh?
the only real alternative im aware of (that's reasonably short) is hoping on 301 shortly after richmond. take it up to 50E and then to 97N where you can then hop on 100W (so now you're past DC) to 29N over to 70W and continue on from there.
ive taken it a couple times, and while it does miss DC traffic, you're stuck at a lot of stoplights, so its not a perfect solution.
the only real solution thats ever worked for me is not to go through DC at 5.

i take 77 -> 81 when im coming from the western part of nc/sc. much better drive, but it would probably be the same if not longer then dealing with dc traffic if youre coming from raleigh.

81 only really works because of where your final destination ends up...if you were going somewhere else it wouldnt be as viable...
but esp. because its a friday, i would give it some serous consideration
also its columbus day weekend which = federal holiday on monday, so there will be heavier traffic than normal getting out of DC

yeah, i didnt realize how far west gettysburg is.
i would go that ^ way over 301.
...it may be quicker to go up 95 then take 64 at richmond. over to 81.

I'm also playing with taking 29 up to Waynesboro and catching 81 there. It'll be a 7 hour trip no matter which route we end up taking.
Believe me, if this presentation was at 8am Saturday, I'd just leave at the buttcrack of dawn and drive up tomorrow. 10/5/2007 8:48:22 AM |
