let's see, considering that diesel costs more than gas, i wonder how many miles you would have to drive to make up for the $7000 engine...10/7/2007 12:47:33 AM |

^don't forget diesels always resale better too. you get your money back.
i think the new super duty front ends are hideous. i've still got mixed thoughts on the new diesel. i'd still take one over a tahoe though. my 99 super duty has been a decent truck, not that it really has much in common with the new ones. 10/7/2007 12:53:37 AM |

true enough, there're plenty of good arguments for diesels, i just don't think fuel economy is one of them 10/7/2007 12:56:58 AM |

Does anyone know why diesel cost more than gas in this country? I went oversea this summer, and diesel is actually cheaper than gas there. 10/7/2007 1:07:46 AM |

it hasn't always been that way, i can remember diesel being cheaper than gas, but i don't know the dynamics of it 10/7/2007 1:14:44 AM |

^^^it depends. if you tow/haul a lot, the savings can really add up. also, if you just drive a lot of miles in general.
for example, my truck can 18-19 mpg on the highway if i drive "normal". it would be amazing for a comparable gas truck to get 14-15mpg, if that. with prices in the $3 range per gallon, it adds up quick. i do agree though... if your main/only reason for buying a diesel truck is fuel economy, that's silly.
the mpg margin isn't as big as it used to be though. modern gas truck engines get better mileage than older ones, and newer diesels get worse mileage than older ones did.
^^a lot of it is due to the trucking industry imo. they used to really fight to keep prices low, but now with the way various things have changed in the industry, far fewer owner/operators, etc. companies just pass the increases along in fuel surcharges. diesel use by regular people is also MUCH more widespread in other countries. in the u.s., it's primarily a commercial market.

2002-2003 7.3L F250/350 FTW. If you get one with 6 speed you're looking at 520 ftlbs stock and one of the most reliable engines ever. 18-20 mpg is to be expected. My parents each have one of the new tahoes (LT's) and they get TERRIBLE gas mileage. My f150 with 5.4 gets better mileage than those FFV turds. 10/7/2007 3:36:48 AM |

thanks for all those opinions. i am leaning towards the truck because i know in 3 or 4 years i will want to get something else and i know resale on the truck would be a little better. also, the truck has more room on the inside as far as where people sit comfortably and i would get much better use from the truck. the tahoe is a little bit more "classy" but i have had a truck since i could drive and i love it. you always seem to have more friends when you have a truck too. granted, its not for the right reasons haha 10/7/2007 1:06:29 PM |
