I ditched class and slept in the night before. When i awoke, i stumbled over to my computer to see if anyone was on AIM to go get some breakfast... there was a single IM from a friend that simply said "are you there?"..........."did you hear about the planes?" I flipped on the TV and watched in disbelief. The rest was history

How did you find out about 9/11?

It was during the 15-minute morning break we had between classes in high school. One of my friends came up to me and said something about a plane hitting the WTC, and nobody thought it was such a huge deal, since we assumed it was a personal plane that had issues or something. Then 5 minutes later the whole school was called into an assembly and the administration prayed for like an hour.

I was in chemistry class, junior in HS.

We had a sub that day, and the original teacher had left us busywork. The sub was a WITCH. This kid kept asking permission to go to the bathroom, and she kept saying no, so he just left. Came back saying "Something's happened! Turn on the TV!". Sub said no He turned on the TV. That was that. 3rd period, and the only class I had that day after that was 6th period german. The Frau took a poll: "more CNN, or class?". We had class

I woke up early and walked over to the library to study for a quiz. I was there for about an hour and one of my friends came over and our conversation went something like this:

friend: Did you hear about the plane that flew into the World Trade Center?
me: What? That's crazy. Are you serious?
friend: Yeah dude, its fantastic.
me: Well I gotta get to class. I'll check you later.

At this time I thought he was talking about a cesna or a single passenger plane. When I got to class my professor filled all of us in with the details. Needless to say, I was shocked.

We were in a 'don't harass the staff' training...one of the admin assistants with a tendency toward the dramatic kept coming in with notes for a vp who had a son in the Marines, so we figured there was something going on, but no idea until the training was over. Spent the rest of the day huddled over a radio because there was no tv and no internet in the office.

I was walking around the corner in VMIs barracks when Magnus, our resident Swede, told me that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Me and the guy I was walking with laughed, since we thought it was a Cessna or some other small private airplane. As I walked to Maury-Brook hall, I felt a little bad about that, probably half a dozen people had been killed and it really wasn't a laughing matter.

I stepped into my classroom just in time to watch the second plane hit the second tower.

All these high school responses make me feel old. I was in my shitty Macro Econ class right after it happened and someone briefly mentioned that a plane had hit. I too assumed it was some small plane until I got back to my dorm and flipped on the tv.

i woke up to buy tickets online for a string cheese incident show at dar constitution hall in washington dc. on sale time of 10am. when i got to the website, it said "due to the tragic events in new york city and washington dc, tickets will go on sale at a later date."

i then turned the tv on and was shocked at what i saw.

happened my junior year of college. i then went to my one class for the day, history of medicine, and we spoke about what had happened and the went on with class... though the professor excused anyone that wanted to leave. i stayed.

seriously. This was my SIXTH year of college.

I was asleep at the frat house, and someone banged on the door that morning and yelled at me to turn the TV on. I had no idea why, and yelled back "What channel?"

when he said "any channel" i got this weird feeling that some bad shit had gone down, and as soon as i flipped on the TV, I saw the first tower with smoke pluming out of it, and a few minutes later watched the second plane hit live.

I was pretty much morbidly fixated on the TV for the rest of the day. Still feels like it happened yesterday.

I heard and saw it first hand.

I was a 7th grader at Our Lady of Pompeii School and we were evacuated after the first plane hit.

We didn't really know what was going on since we were 12, and were sitting outside bullshitting and playing Gameboy when we heard the second plane come in like WOOOOOOOSH. It was so loud you couldn't hear anything else. We didn't really see it until it had cleared the Hudson and was flying low as shit. I remember my friend Derek thought it was a spaceship. We didn't see it hit since there were so many other building between Bleecker and Liberty, but we heard it loud and clear. There was an initial Boom, followed by a louder sound that sounded like the machine gun from Home Alone (I was 12, that was my frame of reference at the time.)

We tried to run and see it, but the teacher's took us underground into an old church and we had to wait for hours in the basement while everyone's parents came and got them. Mine were both out of town, so my neighbor came and got me that afternoon, but I remember being in that basement for hours. Then when I got home, I remember being pissed that the Yankees game was cancelled. I remember not realizing how big a deal it was till a few years later.

i was a junior in college, about to go to class. i was late as hell and flying around as usual. my roomate happened to be watching the news in the living room, and about the time i was running through to leave they switched over to it. so, i figured planes flying into buildings was as good of an excuse as any to stay and miss class.

i have to say, the whole reality of what a significant event/tragedy it was never really sunk in to me until i saw "ground zero" or whatever it's called in person about a month ago.

I walked into my second class for the day and I saw people talking about something serious. And then the teacher walked in and thanked people for showing up despite what's going on. I asked the guy behind me what happened and he told me.

i remember thinking it ironic that my social studies class, which put a lot of emphasis on current events, were like the last people to learn about it

Senior year here, I showed up for History of Technology and a friend in the class said she had heard on the radio earlier on the way over that a plane hit the World Trade Center. She didn't have many details and we both thought it might not be that big a deal, class went on as usual (which is strange, it was a 9:50 class and you'd think everyone would have heard by then...) We walked over to the Atrium afterward to see if we could find out more about what happened and were just floored to find the magnitude of the situation. I remember sitting down on the floor near one of the TV's amongst a crowd of students. The atrium was almost full of people and almost totally silent except for the sound of the newscast...I clearly remember the channel was ABC because, even now, when I think of the news reports of that day, they are all in Peter Jennings' voice.

I was in class when it was happening, the professor knew it had happened and it came to his attention that many of the students were unaware what had happened. He explained that the event would change US history for the next 50 years, in retrospect its pretty obvious, but at the time I was like what? That's the point you want to make right now?

In another class we actually discussed it instead of physics, it was unreal discussing current events in a physics course like that, there were a few Germans in my class and they and a few of the other foreign students more or less were saying we deserved it for supporting Israel. They like to talk about the "Pax Americana".

The whole week was surreal.

i had a parttime job while a Junior at State. i was supposed to go to work that morning. i woke up late. called my supervisor said i was late.

he said, "dont rush. no one's doing anything now. we're all sitting around listening to the radio. The end of the world is happening. Don't you know?"

i was like "huh?"

so, driving to RTP that morning was surreal. there were no aircraft flying around like normal.

i got to my job, at a real hi tech company building a multi-million gate high-speed network security microprocessor, adn everyone was huddled around a little AM radio.

we had 100 computers but not a single TV. all the internet news stations were flooded and you couldnt connect to anything.

that was really weird. 100 linux and windows computers, massive server farm, high tech company... we're all sitting around a radio trying to get tidbits of news from the local AM station.

that was surreal in itself.

a lunch that day i told my boss we needed to just "kill everyone browner than me". i was joking of course, but now i regret saying it.

Senior year of hs, was on the way back from a short career fair trip and heard it on my walkman on the bus as a small announcement from the dj that a plane crashed in NY. By the time we got back I headed to my shop class where they had the tv out watching and all the hillbillies were speechless. The rest of the day all the teachers had to keep telling us to stay quiet about it all, but they were just as curious as us as to what was going down.

senior year at state. my bf was over and still sleeping, so i didn't turn on the tv that morning ... i always watched the today show while getting ready, still do. once ready, my friend picked us up to go to campus and she mentioned it. it was being reported on the radio. we watched the second plane hit from his room in bagwell.
i had two scheduled classes that day; both of which ended early because all we did was watch tv and talk about it.

I was junior in HS. They didn't tell us until right after the second plane hit. So we watched TV for a while, but then we had to go to an assembly so the Josten's guy could talk about class rings. No one wanted to be there, and all kinds of wild rumors started circulating about more attacks. The Pentagon one turned out to be true, though.

I was in high school...our principal came over the loud speaker and announced it. All the classes turned on the tvs to see what was happening, and we saw the second plane hit... then it got really crazy when everyone starting hearing about the Pentagon because it was about 15 minutes from where my high school was....

it was my first senior year in college, i happened to be working that morning setting up a computer lab. we thought the internet wasn't working right because when we kept trying to pull up cnn.com (which is what most of the default pages were) it was very slow to load, if it loaded at all. Then a guy came in at the community center and was like "hey a plane just hit the WTC." I assumed it was a small personal plane, and didn't think much about it, until we went to the TV to see it and the second plane crash.

i went home, watched the rest of the coverage, but then I had an afternoon geomorphology class i needed to make it to, so I spit on and threw rocks at every muslim I saw on the way to class that day.
