going to asheville for short mini weekend....leaving friday returning sunday
what is there to do? here's what we're thinking: - hiking (but where?) - biltmore estate - linville caverns (worth it?) - mt mitchell
^ preferably good places to see but not too far from asheville
also, will check out the nightlife...any restaurants/pubs/clubs to recommend?
thanks! 10/15/2007 1:03:27 AM

and walk around downtown for awhile, so much shit to check out
Over Easy Cafe had pretty good breakfast, and I had a killer dinner at a vegetarian restaurant called Rosetta's Kitchen
had a good time hanging out on the patio at Asheville Brewing, too
did some camping and hiking at the North Mills River Recreation Area, about 35 minutes from the city, and a beautiful spot

me and my friend were stumbling around downtown really late trying to find some food and nothing was open. the first open place we found was Rosetta's Kitchen
we got in line and i finally came to the conclusion that it was all vegetarian so we left and i shouted for every animal you don't eat imma eat 3
then we went to this burger place down the road - it was delicious, god i was starving 10/15/2007 1:43:29 PM

Not much has turned yet.
I enjoyed going up to Mt Mitchell, even though the observation deck and the trail to the summit are closed right now. I spent so much time on the parkway yesterday that I forget what was in the ~1hr before asheville. Got off there and headed home, so don't can't speak for anything south.

I think CodeRed got his mountains confused....it's Chimney Rock at Lake Lure, which is fab. Make sure the park is open though. It was supposed to close for the changeover to state-owned from private. 10/15/2007 11:33:59 PM

I was up there this past weekend. Leaves were just starting to turn... nothing too spectacular yet, except from extreme heights (the view from the top of Hawks Bill was beautiful). Did some backpacking through Pisgah Ntnl Forest/Linville Gorge area... camped overnight near Table Rock. If you want to dedicate most of a day to hiking, there are plenty of trails there that spawn off parking areas. Graveyard Fields is also a great choice.
Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. was a lot of fun... their Ninja Porter is great (and they were showing Transformers for $2 ).
You can also check & see what is going on at the Orange Peel...
(As for Linville Caverns... I think they're pretty lame... Essentially you walk through some caverns while some person tells stories/jokes, they turn off the lights, you walk back out & through their gift store full of overpriced rocks...and you're done. Although I have been atleast 4-5 times in my life, so I could be biased. ) 10/16/2007 12:04:16 AM

yo krazedgirl, how'd it go?
I'm going up this weekend and this thread was helpful. We're thinking about going to a burlesque show at the Grey Eagle. Anyone seen the Rebelles before?
Any other suggestions of what might be going on this weekend?

that's pretty funny, i was at Barley's that friday night too.
anyways, we also ate at this place Doc Chey's (i think) that was pretty awesome. noodle bowl/asian food.
if you have time, and like music, you should check out Harvest Records. really cool record store. it's near Grey Eagle
Biergarden was a good time as well
but yeah, we had fun just walking around downtown. found a random square/park in the middle of downtown with a dj, it was fun watching hippies and crackheads dancing for a while

gonna try to hit the Grey Eagle. love me some Turbodog. I'm also excited to be there the weekend before Halloween. the crazies should be out in full effect.
as far as hikes, anyone have any experience with Dupont State Forest? A few good trails over that way that I've found online look promising. Three different 'falls trails and Stone Mountain looks like it offers good views of the Pisgah Range.
