Had a debate with my girl about U-turns.
I say in NC you can U-turn anywhere there isn't a no U-Turn sign.
She says you can only do it at intersections.
TWW, you decide who wins this bet.
Also, proof of said law would help my case. 10/15/2007 1:33:01 PM |

those gaps in medians designed for U-Turns for exits/entrances to big shopping areas.
TW Alexander in Durham has like 50 of these.

In the middle of the goddamn road...that's where I U-turn. At intersections you have to wait for lights, etc. usually. I just whip it around if there's nothing coming and I'm headed the wrong way.
And I'm talking about like a 4 lane highway with no median, for example.

Are we counting like 3 pt road turns as U turns? 10/15/2007 1:37:06 PM |

^^Yeah, for PASSING.
Else, it'd be illegal to make a left hand turn into like, for example, a driveway.
Show me where it says it's illegal to do that.
^Aren't they the same? It's still a U-turn, just depends on road width and turning radius I think.

In the middle of the road. It's nice to wait for intersections in a city... they are all over the place, but there are a lot of low traffic areas where there aren't many intersections. So if you want to turn around do you just pull a U-turn in the middle of the road or do you just drive 5 more miles to the next intersection?10/15/2007 1:38:42 PM |

This is common practice where I live - and we do it right in front of cops, all the time.10/15/2007 1:39:10 PM |

You're right. She's wrong.
If your car has a tight turning radius, you can pretty much U-Turn wherever you want given there is no sign indicating otherwise. 10/15/2007 1:41:06 PM |

I would say its illegal.
I was on blue ridge once by the theatre and saw a guy just whip a u-turn out of nowhere. A cop who was going the opposite direction immediately turned his lights on pulled the dude over.
But this is all I could find as far as law's
Quote : | "§ 20-153. Turning at intersections.
(a) Right Turns. – Both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
(b) Left Turns. – The driver of a vehicle intending to turn left at any intersection shall approach the intersection in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of that vehicle, and, after entering the intersection, the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection in a lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction upon the roadway being entered.
(c) Local authorities and the Department of Transportation, in their respective jurisdictions, may modify the foregoing method of turning at intersections by clearly indicating by buttons, markers, or other direction signs within an intersection the course to be followed by vehicles turning thereat, and it shall be unlawful for any driver to fail to turn in a manner as so directed. (1937, c. 407, s. 115; 1955, c. 913, s. 5; 1973, c. 1330, s. 18; 1977, c. 464, s. 34; 1997-405, s. 1.) " |
