I want to become a bartender and I want to be licensed. Do I have to go to a bartending school? The website (for the Raleigh bartending school) says, "Yes."
Maybe that's just the quickest way to become a bartender, so you don't have to work your way up?? I don't know. 10/16/2007 10:37:53 AM |

I dont know a single bartender that has gone to bartending school. Or a single bar that wants to hire those tools. Those schools are for people that want to work at Applebees. 10/16/2007 10:45:13 AM |

like they say, its not necessary, but it doesnt hurt to take them if you have the money and time.
my mom works across from the raleigh bartending school. ive been up there because we know the owner. its a cool setup. they give you a ton of note cards with drinks on them to memorize.
you will pretty much know every drink when you come out of there.
or you could save the money and learn over time. 10/16/2007 10:52:21 AM |

I know numerous managers in the service industry who will throw away resumes that say "Raleigh bar tending school." It is a dead giveaway of a person having no experience tending bar. Start waiting tables and work your way up. It doesn't take too long if you are good. 10/16/2007 11:11:31 AM |

I hope you feel good serving "tree smackers" to drunk dudes who go out and wreck a family of 5 after you served him! 10/16/2007 11:20:20 AM |

Unless you work at a martini bar the majority of the drinks that you make will have two things in them. 10/16/2007 11:22:01 AM |

Agreed. As soon as they see that on your application/resume, you are in the trash bin.

Pretty much what I figured.
I'm already waiting tables, but I want to bartend, but I can't since I have no experience. I understand the logic, but it's so crappy watching borderline retarded people suck at their job. That's the real world for ya.
Thought the classes might expedite the process, if I wanted to bartend at the corporate level. Meh. Maybe I'll just do parties and stuff. 10/16/2007 11:26:13 AM |

I know several.
And they don't put it on their resume. They went to get faster and relearn a lot of the random ass drinks someone only orders once in a blue moon. Net result is they make more money on tips and tabs because they can get the drinks out faster and make them properly.
It's kind of like a tech certification, worthless on its own, but in addition to good experience its beneficial.10/16/2007 11:38:52 AM |

yeah that sounds about right
i did a correspondence course for vet assistant to learn a lot of jargon and restraint holds, but when i applied for a job at the vet clinic i did not tell them about it. i got the job based on my experience, but what i learned to get that certificate was instrumental for steamlining me right in to get that job.

anyone who has waited tables knows these certifications are bs and 9 times out of 10 they only hire people that are already there. And as for watching other people suck at their job... wtf 10/16/2007 12:06:59 PM |
