Man! This thread makes me sad. I do not have thyroid problems but a few of my family members do and they eat very healthy and still gain a lot of weight. Some people lose a lot weight with thyroid problems. It depends if the thyroid problem is over-active or under-active. 10/17/2007 11:34:49 AM

With my family members that does not always work. I am aware of a few people that cry thyroid that are just fatties as well! That is very annoying because they don't try to help their under-active thyroid if that is truly their medical problem by overeating!!

i've never understood this, regardless of thyroid activity...or anything else, if you take in less calories than you burn you have to lose weight.....right? granted, some people may burn calories at a slower rate than others, but that means you have to take in less as well. 10/17/2007 11:44:29 AM

It doesn't work like that. Some people will not lose weight on a 1000 calorie per day diet. It's difficult to get enough nutrition eating such a small amount which can lead to a whole slew of other health problems for the person with an hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) who is trying to lose weight.
In addition to weight gain; symptoms of an hypothyroidism include fatigue, lethargy, depression, and poor concentration. Try losing weight when you're suffering from even two of those symptoms and you'll see why your simplified view of hypothyroidism is fundamentally wrong. 10/17/2007 12:08:53 PM

Right. My mom doesn't even have a thyroid gland - they had to be removed. She takes medicine to make up for not having it. She's about to run a half marathon, but it's still extremely challenging to keep weight off. If you don't want to believe that "thyroid problems" can cause you to be fat, you're just an idiot. 10/17/2007 1:04:48 PM

Quote : | "Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This tends to slow down the body's functions. Symptoms include tiredness, constipation and sensitivity to the cold.
Approximately 1 in 50 women and 1 in 1000 men will develop symptoms of hypothyroidism at some stage in their lives. Once diagnosed, treatment is usually straightforward." |
I'm not saying it's not a real condition, or that doesn't make it harder to lose weight, but there's a relatively small percentage of the population who actually have this type of problem, compared to our overall percentage of overweight people. Also treatment, from what I've read is pretty simple if you're willing to put in your part of the work.
Quote : | "Treatment
Thyroxine (T4) can be given in tablet form. The body is able to convert this to T3 just as it would if the thyroid gland were producing the thyroxine normally. It can take some time to get the dose right. It is usual to start with a low dose, building up gradually every six weeks and adjusting the dose according to TSH levels.
People usually feel much better once they are taking thyroxine. Side-effects are unusual because a missing hormone is simply being replaced." |
also:
Quote : | "Causes of hypothyroidism
Iodine insufficiency The chemical element iodine is a major component of thyroid hormones. Worldwide, a deficiency of iodine in the diet is the leading cause of hypothyroidism." |
In a lot of cases the condition is developed, so it's not like these people, for the most, part are just dealt a bad hand.
There are many factors that go into the ease of weight gain/loss. My point is, if you're willing to work at it (instead of just saying "I can't lose wieght because of x condition, so there's no use in trying), the vast majority of these factors can be managed, through a combination of treatment, diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle. 10/17/2007 1:20:34 PM

watch what you eat.
its your health.
its all in your head.
im just saying, if you eat unhealthy, and blame a thyroid for you gaining weight.. then you have problems.

Though people with multiple complications (my mother included) with thyroid problems still have a lot of trouble with it, but not because there isn't treatment. Since some of the treatments for hypothyroidism (like Synthroid) can interact with the other medicines she's on, she simply can't take the drugs/hormones.

Considering that she tries to eat healthily and has a disease that is breaking down the muscles in her body (and is advised not to exercise for that very reason), I don't know how much "hard work" can always make up for a thyroid problem under extreme circumstances.
I mean, feel free to blame most fatties for being lazy, but there are rare cases in which it doesn't have much to do with them.

thyroid problems or not, if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. if not, you will gain weight.
i'm fat because i eat a lot of rich food and drink a lot of beer, and i don't exercise as much as i should. 10/17/2007 2:20:50 PM

TBH i can understand the freshman 15 (i had a freshman -5), just because you start partying & drinking beer a lot, and have a wide variety of food choices, so until you learn how to live on your own, its hard to control the unhealthy stuff. 10/17/2007 2:56:26 PM
