can we get a class action law suit against bars, banks and establishments who take forever to post transactions? it's bullshit i went to a bar last Thursday and it doesn't post to my account until 12:47am this Thursday. i didn't do anything stupid this time that would make me overdraft but i can see how this shit would generate $mars for the banks to keep doing this.the banks always blame it on the establishments but it's funny i have like 8 charges show up the same day. what do u guys think? 10/18/2007 1:02:43 AM

Cry more. If you want it to post faster, why don't you offer to process their CC transactions for them. If you don't offer, they'll do it on their own time at their own pace. I've had charges that didn't appear for more than a month. 10/18/2007 1:05:17 AM

not that i have to, but if it's thread worthy for you to point this out, maybe you should keep better track of your finances.

and not run up bar tabs on your last dollar
if your finances are so tight that a bar tab might cause you to overdraft, you have no business spending money at a bar

man, i remember the days of having like $5 in my account and knowingly running up a huge bar tab. it was like credit on my checking account, with a $30 "interest" charge. i'm glad those days are over.

seems like i remember wachovia being accused of something similar? they would purposely process the largest item (that you could cover) first, then process the smaller items causing you to overdraft multiple times. had they processed the smaller charges first in the correct order, only the larger charge would have overdrafted... 10/18/2007 2:31:30 AM

Don’t use a debit card for bar trips
1) There is usually a hold which directly impacts your bank account (with a credit card there may be a hold but for many people the limit on a credit card is very high).
2) You have a month to pay the tab if you use a credit card (assuming you pay your card off every month).
3) If there is a fuck up at least with a credit card you can argue it before the money is already deducted from your account.
4) Two times I have had an issue with a credit card and a bar trip. One time was with an overcharge and the other time was with a tip that didn't match what I left. Each time it was decided in my favor very quickly. 10/18/2007 3:40:07 AM

my stuff always posts right at the 3rd morning after i use my ATM card somewhere.
actually its the same if you pay attention to the credit card statement in quicken, but no one keeps track of that as much 10/18/2007 10:19:46 AM

also if youre not a shithead and just keep your receipts in your wallet until theyve been ledgered, you wont have any trouble from the banks
i was too lazy to use the paper book and hated carrying it, so i got quicken 2008. every other day or so, i empty my wallet onto the table and enter it all.
then it hits up my bank and puts checks next to the stuff thats cleared!!!1
its amazing!!!1

what happens when you use your credit/debit card:
1) the merchant processes the transaction, visa/MC/whoever checks to see that the money is available and gives merchant an approval code
2) visa/mastercard/whoever notifies your bank that this merchant has requested $xx.xx dollars, they put a hold on the funds
3) during this hold period the merchant can adjust the final total. restaurants typically do this, they put a hold on for $10 over the amount to adjust for tipping and whatnot. they can also cancel the hold and not charge you for whatever reason (ever wonder why when someone is verifying your credit card info you get charged for $1 but it just disappears a day or two later? that's why.)
4) the final total is sent to visa/MC/whoever during their nightly batch, who then informs your bank that the charge is final.
5) once the charge is final, it appears on your bank statement/online/whenever.
so it's not the bank's fault, it's the merchant's. you don't see the charge until they finalize the transaction amount. 10/18/2007 10:24:45 AM

i agree....i've argued with my bank many, many times over similar problems. i've gotten to the point where i've just went back to carrying cash. it's much less of a headache imo. 10/18/2007 10:29:20 AM

you could always go to the atm if you were that bad at bookkeeping and worried about it right? i know if i get 35 in gas on my debit card, it doesnt "go through" then, but it does make 35 dollars less available on my atm card 10/18/2007 10:35:57 AM

I'm pretty sure this has been done before - but all you have to do is convince a firm to take your case on contingency. Or see if a class action suit is in progress where the deadline to add parties hasn't passed.
Let me know your progress, I don't really have any problems with this anymore but I could use some "free money" 10/18/2007 10:37:41 AM

i'm not saying banks should hold my hand through every transaciton and i agree that this should be my responsibility but doesn't the bank have some responsiblity if they are handling people's money to keep more accurate records(i.e. not allow merchants to process things after so long). what if you were to lose a receipt from your wallet? cool u can check your balance online and see your charges ... 2 weeks from now. also you guys are saying it's the merchants fault but like i said i always notice my charges come in lumps so you're saying sammy's , bp AND jack astors all decided the same night to put shit thru??? 10/18/2007 4:58:01 PM
