So far the cast includes: (among others)

Shaun (of the dead) is playing Scotty
Harold (&Kumar/white castle) is playing Sulu
Some dude born in 1989 is playing Chekov
and Bruce fucking Banner from "Hulk" is playing the bad guy.

Jesus H. Christ.

well what did you expect?

If you're going to do the crew at a young age, you're going to have to get young actors.

Although they could have done better on the bad guy, no need to make that a younger actor.

Beyond that, you should at least wait until you see a trailer before you pass judgement on what they're doing. I'm not saying that they're going to revitalize the franchise, but it might at least be better than Star Trek: Insurrection

^Insurrection wasn't the worst movie. It was pretty bad, but it's got nothing on Nemesis (or ST5, which Billy Shatner ruined because of his massive ego). But yeah, I think it will be quite a task to make a Star Trek movie that's worse than either of those two. That doesn't mean I have high hopes for this one, though.

Trek has always had a measure of cheese/campiness to it, but the reason it's sucked donkey balls ever since TNG is because the franchise takes itself way too seriously. And history will show that the more something takes itself seriously, the more other people will poke fun at it. Trek has become a fucking joke in the eyes of many people; you can see it in jokes such as "if you're wearing a red-shirt and/or aren't a main cast memeber, you will die." Trek has become the standard by which to judge bad modern sci-fi and bad writing. I'm not asking for Trek to be loved and respected, but I think that they shouldn't even bother with making another movie right now. Maybe make another one ten years from now. Wait long enough for pop-culture to effectively forget about Trek. After that, the corpse will at least seem fresh.

people hate it because Data died, and it felt pointless that he did die...

oh, and the whole cloning picard thing...

but if they actually took their horse blinders off they'd actually discover that it's by far not the worst Star Trek movie out there... i can think of two off the top of my head that are worse (Insurrection, and IV: the search for big fish)

If I ever see you in person I owe you a swift kick to the jimmy for saying Star Trek IV is one of the worst.

My friend told me the other day that Sylar would be playing the next Spock. This intrigues me.

i actually thought Nemesis was good. Data didnt really die, he downloaded his entire memory into B4 which they hinted at slowly becoming Data in the end of the movie (whistling).

I personally think the idea of doing a young cast is the worst fucking idea ever

they go back in time to steal some humpback whales in a stolen klingon ship...
subtract the words "star trek" from the title and you can't tell me that isn't the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard of...

seriously people...

Nimoy wastes half a scene oogling some guy's mohawk...

sorry, i had a different opinion of star trek than most, i tend to prefer stories that are at least thinly veiled political exercises... i don't like having someone smack me up side the head with a humpback whale yelling "THIS IS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE" like what happens during IV

no, doing a Star Trek prequel in an attempt to cash in on the original series instead of proposing something new or different is the worst fucking idea ever. Casting a young cast is merely an effect of that idea.

btw, better than Insurrection could still be the worst idea ever, Insurrection wasn't a bad idea, just a bad movie, it belonged as a TV episode, not on the big screen

I didn't hate it because Data died. By itself that was a nice touch because it finally made him human, something he had been pursuing forever. What I hate is that the writing was complete shit.

We'll take Data's death as one example. The whole "I copied all of my brain information and put it into my brother, all before I died" thing is basically a copy of what they did in ST2. Spock put is katra into McCoy, later died, and then was ressurrected. While Data was not resurrected, it leaves the door open should they decide to follow up this movie with yet another sequel. In short, the writers were so bankrupt for ideas that they copied what was done before.

Another example; Shinzon (the villain) needs Picard's blood asap to keep on living or something, but not only does he make them wait in orbit for 17 hours, he invites the mother fucker down to Romulus to have supper, AND DOES NOTHING THE WHOLE TIME. He could kidnap Picard right then and there, and instead he sits around with a thumb up his ass, even though he's going to die soon. Instead, he relies upon this wholy complex scheme that involves Data's retarded brother.

Or how about the fact that he wants to use some super weapon to destroy Earth to bring Romulus to "new heights of glory?" How exactly is that going to work? And I thought Romulus was the reason you were exiled and lived as shitty a life as you have. Why not kill all the Romulans, thus bringing your Reman "brothers" to power? And why kill Earth? What have they got to do with anything? Shinzon was trouted as the next best thing since Khan, the big bad villain who would prove to be more than a match for Picard, and yet he was totally incompetent.

I could go on and on, and actually this guy (http://www.stardestroyer.net/Nemesis/Pictorial.html) makes several good points about why the writing sucks, but what it boils down to is that the writers were lazy and didn't even try. They just threw together a half-assed script with loads of nonsense, stupid mistakes that nobody would make in real life, and missed opportunities, and expected people to pay money to see this movie simply because it has "Star Trek" in the title.

It is precisely because of shitty writing that Trek has become the joke that is. Not all the writers were bad, and the franchise did have its moments; TNG did get better as the seasons went by, and for all its flaws DS9 was a good series. But if you want really bad writing, look no further than Voyager. Every other episode was a holodeck malfunction, a transporter malfunction, something involving time travel that basically "reset" everything so that nobody died and nothing bad actually happened, etc. The concept itself was great, but nearly every episode was just mindless filler. And the episodes that did advance the plot tended to be weak and/or unbelievable.

The other part of the problem was that Roddenbury's vision of the future was kind of stupid. That's not a crime in and of itself, but what added fuel to the fire was that he paraded his vision around as though it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He believed so strongly in his communistic, pacifistic, and culturally sterile view of the future that he wrote everything such that humans were the shit in the ST universe. Every episode since TNG was "we're the human race, and we're better than you." Human characters never take away new ideas from the Klingons, Vulcans, Ferengi, etc, it's always the other groups who see that the human's view is the better one. Humanity is felated into being the source of all good in the universe, that all of the rest of the universe, which is barbaric and inferior, must learn from.

I could keep going, but I feel like this post is too long as it is.

I agree that Insurrection was bad, it's just my opintion that Nemesis was worse. But I wouldn't say that ST4 was bad. It was written as a comedy, intended to be more light-hearted after all the serious drama that played out in the second and third movies. And actually, it was one of the better movies precisely because it didn't take itself seriously. But that's not to say that ST2, ST3, and ST6 weren't good (they did deal with serious issues), those movies were good because the writing was solid and the premises were carried out very well.

A: he gets to know picard because he doesn't feel like he's a full person, that's fairly well established. PIcard is the closest thing he has to family. Beyond that, he has a lot of personal respect for Picards.

But then, no Star Trek villian has ever dined with the captain before wanting to kill him... that's just unheard of right?

You don't destroy Romulus because you need the Romulan military, which he has at the moment. Also, he goes after Earth to elevate Romulus yes, but it's a Romulus under Reman control. You don't simply wipe out your captors, you rule them, it's actually fairly reasonable.

Pretty simple thoughts that easily explain things if you just take time to actually watch the movie. And i never heard Shinzon touted as the next best thing to Kahn, the next best thing to Kahn would probably be Q, but he's not evil enough.

I"m not saying it was a good movie, but I can still think of worse. Insurrection barely qualifies as a movie, it was a two part episode at best. And a bad one at that.

Oh, and Star Trek written as comedy doesn't count as a movie either, it also counts as bad episode writing. If i walk into a movie theater, or sit down for a 2 hour block expecting to see a movie, i want to see a movie. I don't want to live in nostalgia for the humorous bantering of old Star Trek comedy episodes, if I want to see that i'll watch some.

The Motion Picture: seen most of it, plot is very detached from the other films; film makes for a good allegory and man's search for God
Wrath of Khan: awesome, ships blowing up
Search for Spock: never seen it
Voyage Home: decent, the travel back in time thing was good, Chekov in the 1980s asking random San Franciscans on the street in a heavily Russian accent "we're looking for nuclear vessel" makes the film in my opinion
Final Frontier: seen all of it, a bit blah
Undiscovered Country: good movie, explains how the Klingons and humans started to get along when Picard and Worf were on the same bridge
Generations: got to see Shatner die, this one was great
First Contact: best one, Picard goes into the Captain Ahab role that he'd later portray in a TV movie, and after years of being a bland android Brent Spiner is allowed to show emotions
Insurrection: blah
Nemesis: better than Insurrection in my opinion, just cause of the whole humanism with Data dying and the bad guy being Picard's twin, plus this is like Undiscovered Country as here the Romulans and humans get along at the end

The problem with the Star Trek franchise IMO is there's really nothing left to "discover", there's nowhere left for the Enterprise to "boldly go where no man has gone before". No one really cared about Voyager or Enterprise.
