I dont have a link to this...I am listening to local talk radio.

regardless, please conserve your water usage

take showers with your significant others if you have one
limit your showers to one a day if possible. some of you college kids might can go every other day

reduce your showering time

turn your water off when you brush your teef

try to retain rain water for watering your plants (when it does rain )

wash your dishes in the sink instead of using a dish washer

dont flush the toilet after you piss it in once
"if its yellow, let it mellow / if its brown, flush it down"

feel free to add your own ideas

it actually takes less water to use the dishwasher than washing them by hand

^ It isn't going to add much. It was mentioned we need 2 feet to completely erase the drought, and I think we are something like 12-15 inches below average for the year to this point. A decent class 3 hurricane will usually dump in the 5" range if that gives you perspective on how much we need.

This is a fun one

that said, it's been raining every damn day out here.

don't do laundry until you have a full load...mix colors and whites, just wash them with cold water so the colors don't bleed.

also, if you are going to use your large appliances...use them after 9pm to conserve energy which conserves water

and for showers, you can install one of those water conservation shower heads...it's like a mist, but it gets you just as wet.

when heating up water, put it on a low stream and not a fast hard stream. it will heat up just the same.

if you have a water to air a/c...turn off your ac on cooler nights and open those windows!

stop using the garbage disposal in your sink--it requires a lot of water to dispose of the food. make a compost pile instead (which is a benefit in itself for the soil!)
in addition, if you start using paper plates and cups (non glossy and no prints on them though, just plain old paper plates) you can put these in your compost pile which will save on water needed to do dishes.

if you're going to take a bath, go ahead and plug the drain as you fill the tub...once the water gets hot, it will heat up the amount of cold that first gets put in the tub basin.

Raleigh industries waste millions of gallons every day. Even the fire department still lets the fire hydrants run all day. I'll be damned if I'm going to cut back on the 10 gallons a day I use.

i think all of that crap is just the media trying to get people all riled up about the water supply.

look at the graphic for the water in cary. they're almost full and they've only got 206 days.

it's all sensationalist bullshit.

What the fuck are you talking about? Durham has barely over 2 months of water left. That is a fact. A very very scary fact.

i dont see whats so odd about that. all that means is that if they got zero water added to their resevoir from here on out, they could supply the entire city of Cary for 7 straight months using nothing but the stored up water...so personally i fail to see how them 'only' having 7 mos worth of water is somehow a flag for you?

what youre not taking into account is that normally these resevoirs are getting REPLENISHED. so sure normally Cary would have 'only' 206 days left, but in normal conditions its more than that because their storage is constantly getting resupplied. However when we have a drought like this, the days left on supply numbers mean something.

the numbers they are giving are very reasonable and i see no sensationalism

people are scared b/c they've only got 98 days of water in raleigh. look at cary, they've got 90% of their water and it's *only* 206 days, that's SEVEN whole months. it WILL rain before then. we're not gonna die, the world is not ending. it's just sensationalist bullshit from the media.

oh, and i didn't mean to imply that the numbers themselves were bullshit...just what the media does is bullshit.

They also have a "gray water" system. Basically they re-claim the water from their sinks, showers, and toilets so that it can be treated and re-used.

Quote :
" § The bulk reclaimed water program provides up to 200,000 gallons of
reclaimed water per day at no charge to trained and permitted haulers."

It's exactly that type of head in the sand reasoning that gets people fucked up.

First of all, who is saying cary "only" has 206 days left in the media? It is included in that graphic because it's the newsandobserver covering the triangle you idiot. It's just information. Don't you think 100,000 residents would be a little interested about their water supply when they are reading Raleigh with 98 days and Durham with 69 days. Hmmm, why don't they list Cary? What's going on here.

Furthermore, "it WILL rain before then. we're not gonna die, the world is not ending."

You mean, like, it HAS rained several days a week every week this summer like it has historically? You mean, just like 10-20 years ago winters were colder and typically had one or two good snows? Don't be a complete and total idiot. We have been in a particularly nasty drought, there is no reason to think it will suddenly start raining in time to assuage the water supply crisis.

The only comment in there I see as being obviously sarcastic is the cary comment.

If the entire comment was sarcastic, then you were really shitty in the way you portrayed it.

I read it all you dipshit

You think the media is sensationalizing the water issue

And you used the Cary number as some evidence of this

Which rests on the idea that people should be concerned about the Cary number (they shouldn't, yet)

Completely ignoring the Raleigh and Durham numbers that they should be worried about

Which are indeed critical.

Two months isn't shit. And the fact that you take it lightly is really really sad and shortsighted.

He might as well take it lightly, there's nothing he can do about it. I don't lose sleep over the exhaust from my car because I know it's insignificant compared to the shit spewing from factories.

Nothing short of taxing the hell out of water for heavy consumers will really help this.

From what the people I know that live in both towns tell me I think Cary charges about three times the Raleigh rate for the same water usage.

^lol. All the country's, state's, county's, city's, and even person problems would be solved if the Mexicans would just go back.

Im not trying to say we shouldnt conserve, but the sky is not falling. They 'days' left number assumes current utilization (I believe) and assumes NO RAIN. Thats going to be really surprising if we get no rain. we have been through this before, as recently as 3 or 4 years ago. The sky didnt fall then, and it wont today. Take measures to reduce your water useage (I stopped watering my lawn months ago), and dont worry about it.

Ha, that's part of the problem.

Sure, that estimate is conservative. Sure, rain will fall - but if in the next 70 days we only get as much rain as we have gotten in the last 90+ we are going to be in some serious trouble.

My husband and I just hooked up one of our 2 55-gal rain barrels last weekend when we were installing our gutters. That little bit of rain that we got yesterday filled up the entire barrel. I can't wait to finish the gutters so that we have 110 gallons of water at our disposal.

Rain barrels ftw.
