Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro Concept
I guess BMW needs to make a 0.5 Series to compete with this! Actually, they make the Mini Cooper, and that's exactly what this new Audi is being built to compete with.
To be revealed in 4 days at the Tokyo Motor Show.
Engines:
1.4 litre NA petrol 80 hp 1.2 - 2.0 litre turboed petrol and diesel engines
If the 2 litre turbo makes 180-200 hp, this car would be a killer. And the 2 litre TD would be a monster as well, probably with about 150 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque.
Quote : | "No more guesses. No more renderings. We have obtained the first official photos of the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept, believed to be the first version of the Audi A1.
In an earlier interview, Audi Technical Development chief Michael Dick said the A1 would be "manlier and sportier" than the MINI Cooper.
And he was right. This car has a sleek, shapely front-end that seems to form a menacing grin, and rear tail-lights that virtually stare down trailing motorists. This car rides on classy, lightweight, ten-spoke wheels. Inside the cabin, the Metroproject has impressively clean lines, what appears to be paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, and a built-in MP3 player. On top of everything else, you can seemingly keep track of this car's status on your mobile phone!
The Audi Metroproject Quattro, has a battery pack in visibly mounted in the boot, and lit in tranquil blue lights with a charge indicator on the side. We had heard rumor that this concept would be a hybrid, and it certainly seems that way.
The supermini Audi A1 should be available with a turbocharged gas engine, turbocharged diesel engine, ranging in size from 1.2 litres to 2.0 litres. A base model with an 80 horsepower, naturally aspirated 1.4 litre engine is also expected to hit showroom floors.
With a base price at-or-below $25,500, Audi hopes their MINI-killer will sell between 80,000 and 100,000 per year. Audi has done such a good job with the design of this car, that sales of the Fiat 500 might also be affected. Although previously expected at the Frankfurt show last September, the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept will be revealed to the public in person at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on October 24th, at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Production on the Audi A1 is scheduled for 2009.
Dick also said, "When a father sits gladly in his daughter's car, then we've got it spot on."
Congratulations, Mr. Dick. We think you have it spot on." |
GG Audi!

^ Do you really think an 80 hp GERMAN car is going to be sent to the US???
A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7: coming soon (along the lines of MB CLS) A8
Wow... quite a range Audi has got there! Not to mention the Q5, Q7, R8, TT, and S/RS variants of the A3, A4, A5, A6 and A8.
I think the only auto manufacturer with a bigger range of cars is Mercedes.
You know what would be killer... an RS1, with a 300 hp engine 10/20/2007 2:32:54 PM |

That engine info I gave was from worldcarfans.com. Here is what autoblog.com says:
Quote : | "Power comes courtesy of a 1.4-liter TSFI engine, making 150 HP and mated to an S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox. While that combination is nothing to get too excited about, it's what's behind it that is. A 41 HP electric motor is mounted on the rear axle, able to produce 147 lb.-ft. of torque when lying on the long pedal. With the new motor residing out back, this gives the A1 plug-in capability, allowing lithium-ion batteries to be charged and giving a 100 km range in pure electric bliss." |

Lots of real pics:
http://www.worldcarfans.com/3071018.002/audi-metroproject-quattro
Technical details:
http://www.worldcarfans.com/9071024.006/audi-metroproject-quattro-hybrid-unveiled-in-tokyo
So here is what the engine is:
4 cyl. 1.4 lit. TFSI: 150 hp, 177 lb-ft Electric motor: 41 hp, 148 lb-ft
About 48 mpg on combined cycle 0-62 mph in 7.8 sec.
And the best thing, it comes with a removable control unit:
Quote : | "Audi mobile device – form and function
The centre console houses a new, innovative technology: the removable Audi mobile device. This portable unit functions as an access authorisation system for the vehicle, mobile phone, navigation unit and audio and video player all in one. Plus, it serves as the control unit for numerous vehicle systems which can also be set from outside the Audi metroproject quattro. The mobile device offers the entire range of functions and exact same menu navigation as the MMI system and integrates a host of communications devices that were previously only available separately into a single, extremely space-efficient unit.
This allows the driver to use the compact device as an MP3 player, for example, or as an address database and input tool for the navigation system. What's more, he can switch on the vehicle's heating if required and program the sound system to suit his personal preferences, all from the comfort of his own home. Access and start authorisation for the Audi metroproject quattro is also provided by the Audi mobile device, dispensing with the need for a key.
The unit is operated using a touchscreen, whose architecture replicates the MMI standard. The touch-sensitive screen is capable of recognising both Latin and Japanese characters, and is even able to decipher handwriting. The Audi mobile device and vehicle communicate via a WLAN connection.
The Audi mobile device also offers the vehicle owner an extra security function: images from a camera in the vehicle interior can be received on the device's display in real time. If the vehicle alarm is triggered, the system activates itself and warns the owner. Should the vehicle be stolen and move out of the WLAN connection's range, the electronics automatically switch to the car phone's UMTS transmitter to keep the owner informed of the vehicle's current location." |

Wow, pretty neat. I was just thinking the other day about how remote start was becoming more common, but you couldn't do such things as change your HVAC settings or switch on heated seats from inside the house. Now, I suppose, you will be able to.
All in all...definitely the most badass compact car that I've seen, and (at least in my opinion) a hell of a lot sexier than the MINI or 1-series. Audi may have just created the perfect around-town vehicle. Need to start saving my pennies for 2009 I guess...

horrible, HORRIBLE idea. I really hope by WLAN, they mean they hired an engineering firm to develop a completely proprietary protocol requiring non-standard hardware to even connect.11/15/2007 11:20:59 AM |

Audi A1 Details Released Ahead of Geneva Debut
Quote : | "Under the hood, the A1 is avalible with two TFSI or two TDI engines (all four-cylinders). The 1.2-liter TFSI produces 63 kW (86 hp) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque, which enables the A1 to run from 0-100 km/h in 12.1 seconds (with a five-speed manual transmission), before topping out at 179 km/h (111 mph). While it's no rocket, the 1.2 TFSI consumes 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (46.12 US mpg), while emitting 119 grams of CO2/km (191.51 g/mile).
If you select the 1.4-liter TFSI, you'll be rewarded with 90 kW (122 hp) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. When paired to the optional the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, the A1 1.4 TFSI accelerates 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds (9.2 seconds with the six-speed manual) and has a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). While Audi declined to release emissions data, they stated the 1.4 TFSI consumes 5.1 (S tronic) and 5.4 (manual) liters per 100 km (43.56 and 46.12 US mpg) in the EU test cycle.
On the diesel side, Audi offers two 1.6-liter TDIs. The base unit produces 66 kW (90 hp) and 230 Nm (169 lb-ft) of torque, which allows the A1 to hit 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds, before peaking at 179 km/h (111 mph). In terms of efficiency, the engine consumes 3.8 liters/100 km (61.90 US mpg), while emitting 99 grams of CO2/km (159.33 g/mile).
The range-topping 1.6-liter TDI churns out 77 kW (105 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft), which results in a 0-100 km/h time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 187 km/h (116 mph). Despite the added performance, fuel efficiency only declines to 3.9 liters/100 km (60.31 US mpg).
Regardless of what engine is selected, they all feature "a recuperation system that allows them to recover energy during braking, and are coupled with an automatic start-stop system."
The A1 will go on sale this summer, with a base price of approximately €16,000." |

Three pieces of info about the A1:
1) Audi A1 S-Line Sport Package
Guaranteed to make your 86 hp car make look like it makes double of that, if not more!
2) Audi A1 e-Tron Revealed
Powered solely by the electric motor and uses the combustion engine as a generator!
Peak power: 100 hp Continuous power: 60 hp Peak torque: 111 lb/ft Continuous torque: 177 lb/ft
0.25 litre single-rotor Wankel engine
Here is the best bit: 124 mpg
3) Quote : | "Audi has announced that the entertaining-looking three-door isn't headed to the States. Given how the A3 has festered in darkened showroom corners in the American market, we can't exactly blame them for not importing an even smaller hatchback, but somehow we think this Mini Cooper-fighter might just find a market where the frumpier, more conventional A3 has stalled." |

only VW would choose to use a rotary engine in a hybrid
Quote : | "Unfortunately for NSU, the car developed an early reputation for unreliability, from which it would never escape. The Wankel engine in particular suffered from heavy wear on the rotor tip seals, among many other problems, and some early cars required a completely rebuilt engine before 30,000 miles (50,000 km), with problems visible as early as 15,000 miles (24,000 kilometres)." |

that sounds like an excellent decision. adding a big torquey electric motor would be a great addition to a motor that is notorious for not producing much torque. the lower weight of the rotary engine will help offset the added weight of batteries and generators. rotary engines run smoother and would be less likely to create transient surges in the generator similar to those caused by 4-cylinder piston engines.3/28/2010 8:21:28 PM |

I never understood the big deal about having to rebuild it so often. The engine is so small that you can remove it by hand, and the motor has all of five moving parts. Besides, I thought the new rotaries don't have the same problems with seals. 3/30/2010 9:20:53 AM |
