I never really though of a didgeridoo as an ensemble instrument.

Didgeridoos are awesome. You've gotta do the whole circular breathing thing. Takes a while to get the hang of that.

So I assume there's not too may Didgeridoo players out there then?

Once you master circular breathing and making the specific drone and "popping" sounds it's a really great instrument. Then once you add in some overtones and some simultaneous beat-box while you got a drone going it sounds pretty neat.

My friend back at home had one that she played. I never thought of it as an overly versatile instrument.

Aww, dude, I think "best first post ever" is a compliment. Most folks don't have much else to say cause the didgeridoo isn't a widely embraced instrument, and they have to say something cause that's just the way folks are.

Didgeridoos are great, but if they could invent one that could change pitch...

Oh, right. It's called the trombone. And the trumpet. And the tuba. And so on. Same principle, just made out of brass so it doesnt sound like an exended release of wet flatulence.

Why couldn't you? It has nothing to do with the instrument. Its just a technique thats not typically used with them.

I've circular breathed on a trumpet before. It's harder than most woodwinds, but it's possible.

Some dude on youtube:

I can't circular breath, but I can play mine otherwise. Personally, if I am going to sit on some hippy jam sesh, I'd prefer to bring my djembe.

^^^I can hold a note for 8-10 minutes on a sax but after that jaw feels like its going to fall off.
