Does anyone on here have any experience with the Mogul phone? I'm looking into getting the Mogul in December - switching from Sprint to SERO and I want a phone upgrade. I'm generally impressed with the phone (I know a lot of close contacts with the phone, and they're happy with it). But my PC laptop is pretty crappy. I know for a lot of the general set up, the PC is needed, but in general, is a PC hookup necessary?

IIRC, can't you download programs and things for the phone from the computer to the phone? I know I'll have a good PC to set it up with, but after that, I'll mainly be using a crappy Compaq laptop. I just wanted to know if it's worth it to get the Mogul when that's what I'll be working with. Or if it's smart to get ANY sort of PDA phone right now? (Should I wait till I have a better computer?)

I have a Mogul, and if you are going to have the unlimited SERO plan, most things you can download and run right on the phone. I only use my laptop (POS 6yr old dell to sync my outlook calender and some emails). With the data connection manager, it is really easy to set up email syncing without having to hook it up to a computer at all.

My Gmail took all of 30 seconds to setup and sync. Any .cab files for programs or hacks can be downloaded on the phone, and you just use the file manager to find and run them.

Took me about a week to get up to speed using all of the phone's capabilities, and I don't know why a lot of people don't like the phone. WM6 has a few memory leaks, but either a quick reset or a few downloadable hacks will solve this. There are also several registry hacks that are simple enough to do (plenty of walkthroughs on sprint users forums) to remedy what WM6 lacks right out of the box.

I have the HTC-6800 and love it. the device works incredibly well for using microsoft office applications, and it gets a decent signal in most areas of the country I have worked in. the 802.11b connectivity makes it really nice for using around the house or in hotels. It's very easy to download programs to the phone either over USB from a computer or directly off the internet. The main reason I have this device is for keeping all of my work schedules and emails up to date synchronized with my computer when I am working out of the office. If you're not using it for this purpose, there are probably better devices out there.

I don't use it as my primary phone, but the sound is clear enough on it that I could. I just don't like the feel of it as a phone and don't want to carry around a wireless headset. I doubt the battery would make it a day using the device as a phone and for constantly updating emails and schedule.

^^^I've looked at the Treos. I really dislike the feel of them. They seem big and bulky, and I just didn't really care for the ones I've looked at. And Sprint's service is pretty great, at least it is 1000% times better than Cingular (IMO).

^^Sweet, that sounds great. I use Gmail, so if I can get my phone set up that way, that would be awesome. If I get the phone in mid-December when my contract with Sprint ends, then I'll have about a month with access to a good PC. Once I head back to school, I'll probably use Gmail more than anything. And yeah, both of my brothers and some of their friends bought a Mogul, and it seems like there's a bit of a learning curve, but since then, they have no complaints.

^I was unsure if I'd like the feel of it as a phone, too. I never really liked the candybar phones. I prefer flip phones. But I'd like to have a phone that has the email and organizational capabilities. And the Mogul seems to be the best-feeling Sprint option.

I'm tempted to get a wireless headset for my 6800 and drop my flip phone. If I do that, I'm going to need to get an extra battery. Carrying two phone devices with me everywhere when I'm working can be annoying at times, and my flip phone takes a special motorola charger. The HTC charges over USB without requiring special hardware.

The touch screen and stylus on the HTC work really well. the number pad that pops up when you use it as a phone responds really easily to being pressed with your fingers too.

you can enable g connectivity, but the speeds won't be much different.

i'd do it anyway for the functionality.

read http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44

sprint has released 2 rom updates (1 a complete failure - 1 looks to be decent so far) - i haven't read an announcement saying that htc has released one for alltel

also htc has released a message regarding sprint which i couldn't find for alltel

^^^ not that i'm aware of...i played with with mogul when it came out (because, of course, alltel's main problem is that they get all the new toys months later than everyone else)...the alltel version actually just got a slightly changed exterior, so i like it better

meh, i've been with sprint for about 5 years now. Never had problems.

Well, the retention specialist I recently talked to was a cold bitch, but it's probably because she hears people trying to manipulate and lie their way into better deals all day.

I have to replace my broken treo 650 out of contract. I want sero 500 and a mogul. So yeah, trying to get ret. to set that up for me. Wouldn't even acknowledge the possibility of porting my number to the new sero plan. Though I know it's possible....blah

I personally love alltel. I've never had a problem with service, billing, or call quality (been with um all my cell phone life). The only problem i have with them is their lack of good phones, so I was pretty excited when they announced the 6800 this year.

with all of the work that's been done on the 3.16 rom this is quickly becoming arguably the best phone on the market for the price - the gps / rev A updates push it over the top in my opinion - the official update is rumored to be out on 02/22/08 - i've been running No2Chem's rom for a while now and been updating it from time to time and granted it does take some extra work to get everything just how i like it but

big update today - the official 3.35 release that enables gps and rev-a - supposedly more stable than the leaked 3.16 rom - downloading now to check it out but it won't stay on long because once another hacked rom comes out with wm6.1 as well i'll be sticking with it

i gotta be honest...i'm very disappointed that i didn't get this phone through alltel when i had the chance...the third-party "let's talk" website had the alltel version for $300 with NO activation charge and no plan commitments the day it was released and i canceled it because they had it backordered (though they told me that they'd honor the price i bought it at, even if it came in later)

"Sprint said Monday it was releasing a software update for the Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, that will enable the phone to connect at Rev. A speeds. Downloads speeds should be 600 kilobits per second to 1,400 kbps, up from a range of 400 kbps to 700 kbps with Rev. 0. It will be capable of uploads of 350 to 500 kbps, up from 50 kbps to 70 kbps.

Verizon Wireless has not announced a phone using Rev. A. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the main advantage of Rev. A is higher upload speeds, which is important to laptop users but less so for cell-phone users.

AT&T Inc. already sells phones that use its fastest network technology, known as HSDPA, for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Its listed download speed is the same as EV-DO Rev. A, with a slightly higher upload speed."

bttt

how are people fairing?

ive got a 755p. its good. but it has its weaknesses. i work where i get no service at all, i think its the firewall, i dont know, but my phone has started to act up not sure if its from work, or just general use.

its my second one. my first one was just screwed to begin with, lotsa bugs.

i want a HTC Mogul. few on craigslist for around $250, which i think is the going price for a used/opened one from what a few people have told me.

I finally got the sero plan that I wanted and was able to keep my number. Due to some incompetency with sprint agents causing me to lose promotional pricing on a Moto Q (379.99 - 300 - 79.99=0.00) on my second emergency line, "iCare" finally called me back and gave me a Mogul for 200 no strings or MIR rebates attached. I didn't even have to use both rebates, only the one on my primary line.

So yeah, customer service manipulation and engineering aside, I can't wait until FedEx drops it off next week

I don't know if this is the thread OmarBadu asked to have btt'd, but what are some "must have" applications that I can go ahead and start collecting? Any other tips?

Thanks

Sprint phones always seem to work in odd places where none others do (like a mechanical room in the 2nd basement of a building) ... but not in normal places where all of them should.

^^^ yeah, 5 years for me and I think that ambrosia said it best in another thread.

Quote :
""I've come to the conclusion that the majority of folks who have ongoing problems with sprint just aren't controlling enough when dealing with customer service.""

I had problems with this situation because it was so difficult for anyone but account services or a top level department to take care of. I was never anything less than cordial and now have a direct line to one of the most powerful customer service reps, with permission to call her if I ever have any future unresolvable issues.

currently i'm running a kitchen based off of no2chem's 5067 release
http://67.228.199.237/forum.ppcgeeks/showthread.php?t=25065

they've made it basically dummy proof now
http://ppckitchen.org/

i've played with the 5069 releases but went back to 5067 until 5070 is released

i've been flashing it since sometime last year once the leaked roms started becoming available - WM6.1 alone is worth flashing for right now - all of no2chem's apps are worth including as well - ~5 second gps lock currently

i dont pay for my contract... i only pay if i want another phone.

it seems pointless for me to goto ATT just for the iphone and pay a lot.

my treo755 is the first phone ive had to pay a decent amount for with/without rebates (luckily it had rebates)..

ive always had an inside person that would upgrade us for free, or a little fee. im def. not trying to spend full price on this thing. but im afraid the cheapest is around $200 or so, new from sprint (if i go in there and complain about my 755).. but i havnt had enough probs with sprint to do that

you have no idea how much I pay... on my primary (old line its a SERO through sprint at $30).

i can afford a new iPhone and want one so I am going to get that to get me a new number in the 919 area code, and have a cool new toy to play with also...

so all said and done my cellular bill each month will be about $100, not to bad... very affordable, and its two lines. i used to let my better half use a line on the sprint service for $60/month, so I am already used to paying ~$100 for service.

but yes, I love to get people all torqued when I see the oportunity!

another vote of confidence for the HTC-6800 from a very satisfied customer.

I freelance for the Kinston Free Press, and I was actually able to slip in a baseball story about 10 minutes before deadline thanks to this phone. Typed the story on the device, saved it in Word, and shot off the e-mail with very little time to spare (late start, extra innings).
