in Charlotte this morning

http://www.charlotte.com/news/story/330218.html

short story, a few people from the "Rainforest Action Network" hung themselves from a crane near the Bank of America building in downtown Charlotte (not like noose hanged...note...they are alive and well) and a sign talking about how Bank of America supports coal plants and so they're evil or whatever...course I wonder how much extra CO2 they got in the air from all the stopped traffic they caused

figured i'd make a thread

my perspective is i dont give a shit...plus I just jumped on 277 to get to work like I usually do anyway

Surely there are more productive ways that they can be helping the environment. Like, oh I dunno, planting new trees or something? Their silly little "protests" never work, they only succeed in making these guys look like tools. They don't increase awareness for their cause, they do not inspire people to take action, they just make themselves look like immensely selfish douche bags.

sometimes these protests are counter-productive, no doubt, but to say that they don't increase awareness is idiotic

people do notice, but you cant protest nuclear and carbon producing energy sources and hydroelectric dams. unless their stance is that we should stop using electricity.

The article mentions there were four of the Rainforest Action Network members who were involved...and also that the Rainforest Action Network is based out of San Francisco...the article doesn't, however, mention if these people live in the area or travelled in from San Fran...and if they travelled in the question would be what type of CO2 emitting vehicles did they travel in

Although this protest won't change anything, at least some "activists" get to sleep well tonight knowing that they tried to make a difference. I haven't seen one American protest in recent years that amounts to anything more than some douchebags having a circle jerk.

Many small town banks don't do this.

Either you read the article and didn't comprehend it, or you are trying to throw in a pointless strawman and tieing it all back to the global warming debate, which is not what this protest was about. Not at all.

They're not protesting the use of the coal, just the way the company that BoA invested in is getting it.

I like how BoA could give their exCEO as 20million dollor retirement bonus yet gave my dad's company a "run around the bush" for over a year with the 150K they owed him (nearly putting the small company out of business)

I doubt the BoA board had anything to do with your dad's case.

Combined with the fact that BoA greenwashes like a mofo. If all of my finances were not tied into BoA I would consider relocating my money but I doubt I would find a bank that didn't have some kind of investment into environmentally dubious companies.

Yea, the place was definitely better when you weren't here. There was still some bickering, but it wasn't as baselessly trollish as that.

You can have the last word. I'm done.

how come you'd rather throw out some debate terms like 'strawman' rather than address the story? leave it to a partisan hack like yourself to fuck up this thread

btw the entire TWW is better when you're "between aliases"

Treetwista so first you bitch when environmental groups petition the government for redress of grievances (in other threads). Then you bitch when they take a market based approach to bring awareness and change business practices. Then you bitch that they aren't in the stone age and might have to ride in a (probably hybrid) car to go to where they can have their message heard. Is there anything that is going to please you that will allow us to have a functioning democracy?

if thats bitching......then i dont know what i'd call all the partisan bitching that you guys do on a daily basis about how bad everything is

i dont care about BofA or these protestors...why should I?

Maybe if I worked downtown I'd bitch about the traffic jam their protest called but thats about it...I mean who enjoys traffic jams

i come out and explicitly say i dont give a shit but apparently thats not good enough to convince you that i dont give a shit...great logic

i figured some of you people who do take this shit passionately would spark a discussion...allow me to say again i do not care one iota about this but i saw part of it this morning on my way to work

so tell me what exactly you're trying to add to the discussion? or are you just looking for something to bitch about?

I bet they would hae gotten a lot more notice if they'd used nooses.

Hell, if they'd set themselves on fire they'd go down as legends.

i like their pics. the bald guy looks like he'd be a riot to drop 4 hits of acid and run around on a Saturday night in Las Vegas or Daytona.

and the longhair dude, well that's a pretty awesome pic. he could use that on Facebook and no one would know the difference.
