i think i made this thread a long time ago, but just seeing whats going on in California,
and the fact that something could potentially happen anywhere, i was wondering if anyone keeps a stash of food, water, and supplies for an emergency.
or does anyone have a shelter, guns, etc...

I can loot whatever I need during emergency situations from the better prepared survivors. I also keep a couple gallons of water along with plenty of canned meats and vegetables in a pantry.

Water, MREs, canned soup, tent, sleeping bag, shotgun, rifle, pistols, huge cache of ammo, headlamps, flishlights, chainsaw, 4x4 truck...i could be ready for just about anything within a matter of minutes.

i'm with him^^

and actually we have 3 tents plus a pop up shelter and 3 sleeping bags.
5 gallon jugs of water plus a big sam's case of 20oz bottled water.
a couple of packs of gatorade.
sam's case of tomato soup and another of green beans, plus a bunch of other chicken noodle/vegetable soups.
instant mashed potatoes
bunch of frozen chicken
gas and charcoal grills
sam's case of toilet paper and paper towels
tons of batteries, 4-5 flashlights, a radio that also plays TV audio

i own the house so i keep all of the documents (insurance, titles, etc) plus passports, old drivers licences, pet vaccination records, etc in a fireproof/waterproof safe.

if it really was a HUGE disaster, guns would be necessary to hunt food, unless you plan to just stop eating meat. plus, in a huge disaster you get crazies trying to steal your shit (your food and water esp) so you need to keep them away.

if you ever think you'll need extra water, and it's early enough, and you're still in your house, start filling up the bath tubs and find all of the pitchers and buckets you have to fill up (esp since pets will need drinking water also).

^I was around for Floyd and Fran. I knew Katrina was going to hit New Orleans several days before, and could have easily peaced out. It's not like we don't know when these things are coming.

no, it's not overkill. i was in rocky mount in floyd and the flood that followed. my grandparents' house floated off their foundation. we lived on an island for 7 days.

a canoe wouldn't be a bad idea either...

thankfully we had the jetskis at home during floyd

katrina was a different case than floyd. new orleans and all of that coastal area is below sea level or it's on the coast. they knew there was a big ass cat5 hurricane coming straight for them and they have all those levees that can break. they probably didn't expect them to bust, but that's always a risk and a possibility in a town on the water built below sea level using levees and other ways to restrain water from where it naturally wants to go. esp with winds blowing a million miles an hour and shitty construction/maintenance.
rocky mount, tarboro, princeville, etc are not on the coast. we're next to a small river, with no levees, and the flood didn't come for a few days after the hurricane. there were no evacuation warnings/mandates for us.

Right...and when we do know they're coming then it only takes a minute to pack for the worste case scenario.

What happens if you leave and can't find a place to stay in?
What happens if the storm takes an unexpected turn and catches you? Did you think the people in New Orleans expected to be flooded?

It's not overkill, it's just storing a few extra things in your house or remembering to keep some things stocked.

lol. Have you been to Princeville? There is a 2.5 mile long, 30' tall wall of dirt that encompasses the town.

I'm not prepared, really, although I've thought about getting some of the basics. I don't think the world's gonna end any time soon, but I guess I'd like to be able to stick around if the shit does hit the fan.

I do have a Department of Defense water barrel, which is pretty cool. Left in my garden shed by the previous owners.

Out of the things that I'd actually buy, I'll probably eventually get a water filter, some better general purpose tools, and a still so's I can make me some moonshine after the apocalypse is over.

To answer the original question...I'd say I'm moderately prepared. I have decent protection. I buy 95% of my food from Sam's Club which means I usually have at least a few cases of non-perishable items that I could grab if necessary. I'm a hiker/camper so I have more than enough gear to stay warm and sheltered in any conditions that NC might throw at me (15 degree sleeping bag/pad combo, two nice tents, nice outdoor clothing, etc.) I'd say I could pack my junk and be out of the house in 20-30 minutes if necessary.

Oh yeah, and I'm halfway intelligent which is more important than anything you can buy to get ready for a disaster.
