I'm sure I could use google, and get more information than I could ever read, so I'm asking here.

What do I need to setup and run a small server? What is considered a small server?
What kind of costs am I looking at?

What kind of server do you want? Web server, file server, game server, proxy server, email server, dns server, print server... I could go on. What should this server do? Where is it going to be located? Do you want to buy the equipment and have it near you or do you want to rent it from a hosting company?

Please elaborate.

I know nothing about any of this.

I want to have a basic website that holds contact info the the marching band mellos, be able to save image files to it that I can link to, have accessable storage space from anywhere.
I also will shortly have a nice printer that I would like to be able to print to from the server.

a server is really a piece of software for a machine that handles requests from clients.

yes they do sell speciallized hardware called servers but you don't need anything like that.

I've been talking to a friend about this as well at the same time. Appaently I just need to get a domain name and space. My printer needs can be taken care of seperately.

2. Get an IP nickname to always be able to address your computer/server (FREE) http://www.no-ip.com/

seriously, for what you need just get some decent hosting

it'll be a lot easier and much more secure. plus RR will not let you run a web or ftp server on their non-business class network for very long. they'll notice the upload in the first few days.

You'd learn a ton more to do it yourself. Buy domain name and use dyndns (http://www.dyndns.org) to update your dynamic IP(RR) then load a box w/ Linux and APache (both free)...

Don't forget your A record!

my question is along the same idea - anyone have links to some quick vmware guides? i've got a laptop (2.2ghz p4, 512mb ram, 80gb hd) that's just sitting there running f@h, but i was thinking of setting it up as a file server with a web interface (for my own education)...unfortunately, i've never done this before (though i currently dual-boot freespire, which is essentially ubuntu, but better)
