1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2l 4x4
Lights were left on and the battery was dead, couldn't jump from another vehicle. Replaced battery, truck starts but will die on it's own after a second unless you hold the throttle open some. No trouble codes come up on self diagnostic. Volt meter reads just over 14v when we hold the truck at 1500 rpm. Prior to this the truck has drove perfectly fine and never had a problem with idling.
Any ideas? Does the keep alive memory just need to relearn itself? What's the best way to go about this (driving and avoiding stops is not possible in this area for at least 15 miles, too many stop signs and stop lights).

how long do you try to leave it on while holding the throttle? 10/26/2007 10:41:07 AM |

tried it a couple times, more than 30 seconds on quite a few of them while we were looking things over. 10/26/2007 10:42:36 AM |

no, once it starts we start blipping and holding the throttle down some, otherwise it will die instantly. 10/26/2007 10:50:07 AM |

thats normal, hold it at about 1,500 rpm for about 5 min, then drive it around, most all dodges will do this when the computer is reset 10/26/2007 11:45:08 AM |

well, 1500 rpm for 5 minutes didn't solve the problem. the service rep at the dealer said to just give it enough throttle to keep it right above the stall point for 5-10 minutes. Then if that doesn't work clean the tb and iac pintle and start over. The carbon buildup could keep the pcm from getting the correct number of steps for the IAC. 10/26/2007 1:30:18 PM |

ok, came home after work and the truck started up and idled like it should after letting it sit all day after doing the 1500 rpm thing stated earlier.
glad it works now. just need to redo some battery connectors, replace some speakers, flush/change the tranny fluid, replace shocks, and get an alignment and it'll be good to go. 10/26/2007 6:28:51 PM |
