Cary — Part of Maynard Road was closed after an accident involving a bicyclist and a car on Saturday afternoon.
The bicyclist was injured in a collision with a white Ford Focus at the intersection of Southwest Maynard and Kildaire Farm roads shortly before 1 p.m. He was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries, police said.
Both westbound lanes of Maynard were closed, but have re-opened." |

Bicycle riders in Cary piss me off. They like to get in groups of like 20 and ride around at 6 pm during heavy traffic. They even have those bike riding uniforms that are way too tight. It's weak because you know almost all of them are not doing this competitively and they're just taking up an entire lane. Bikes are not cars! 10/28/2007 8:56:33 AM

I meant more along the lines of, they are powered by humans instead of engines and offer zero protection in the event of an accident, which is enough to keep sane people from riding around in the middle of traffic. 10/28/2007 9:54:06 AM

yup. You're not supposed to be on a regular sidewalk and the campus po-po had been giving people warnings for doing so on campus. And bicycles are technically considered a vehicle and must follow the same rules as cars.

Cary — Police charged both a bicyclist and a driver who were involved in an accident that shut down Maynard Road on Saturday afternoon.
Ramiro Hernandez Morales, 16, of 220 N. Dixon Ave., was impaired while he was driving on Southwest Maynard Road, police said. He collided with a white Ford Focus driven by Justin Edward Vaughn, 226 Blackbird Court, at the intersection with Kildaire Farm Road.
Morales was taken to WakeMed, where police later charged him. He faces one count each of driving-while-impaired and a provisional DWI for underage drinking.
Vaughn was charged with driving with a revoked license.
An update on Morales' medical condition was not available Sunday evening, but officers said his injuries are not considered life threatening." |

enforcement on a college campus or in a park full of pedestrians is one thing
but I constantly see cops overlook bicyclists on sidewalks
just the other day, I saw a whole family (parents and children) all riding on the sidewalk
stopping at the pedestrian crosswalk to use it, etc.
and there were two cops that watched it
one even yielded to them

if the guy on the bike was in the wrong, he isnt getting money.
everyone thinks just because you get hit by a car, whether you are a pedestrian or a biker, you will collect.
no, you will not. if you are wearing black and crossing the street at night and get hit, when you were not looking, and there are witnesses around. they you are SOL.
same with a biker.
its not always win win for a biker.
but the police always react in a way that seems like its the cars fault...

that's the most retarded thing i've heard in a while- what we need are people who pay attention and obey the rules of the road- if some jackass biker swerves out in front of me, i'm not gonna be at fault for their failure to singal/look where they are going. I have repeatedly had people on bikes (and on foot) just jump out in front of my truck on/around campus expecting me to stop- then they are surprised when i have to come to an abrubt stop, and sometimes tap their asses with my bumper-

I always ride on the sidewalks, unless there's someone walking and I'll go around. Those boys with the tight pants can play in traffic if they want, but personally I like to keep a few feet between myself and the cagers. The cops directing traffic have never said anything to me, and I think they appreciate that I'm trying to stay out of everyone's way. Like I said, it's the enthusiasts that ride right in the center of the damn highway that cause all the trouble. 10/30/2007 8:52:06 AM

Oh, so it's the bicycle discussion again, and as usual, ignorant tdubbers are making it black and white for the sake of their pea brains.

Most of them are leaving from bike stores headed out to the country. Unfortunately, they have to be on a few heavily trafficked roads for a few minutes occasionally.
Quote : | "that's the most retarded thing i've heard in a while- what we need are people who pay attention and obey the rules of the road- if some jackass biker swerves out in front of me, i'm not gonna be at fault for their failure to singal/look where they are going." |
Yea, because every cyclist out there is a drunk that likes to swerve in front of 2 ton vehicles traveling 45mph.
Quote : | "I have repeatedly had people on bikes (and on foot) just jump out in front of my truck on/around campus expecting me to stop- then they are surprised when i have to come to an abrubt stop, and sometimes tap their asses with my bumper-" |
I've repeatedly had trucks swerve in front of me in a large group of cyclist on lightly traveled back roads in Cary because we held them up for 45 seconds.
Quote : | "so we're supposed to treat them like a car when they're on the road, but bicyclists somehow get to go through every fucking stoplight they come to?" |
Just like you have jackasses that don't obey traffic laws in cars, you have them in automobiles too. In certain instances (small intersections where traffic is stopped) if I am with a group and the light turns red while I am cycling towards it at 25mph, several of us at the back might be inclined to cycle through the red to stay with the back. This is no different than a car running a red light, and we could technically get a ticket. We don't do this at all lights (especially busy intersections), and I think we can all agree that compromises are good things sometimes.
Quote : | "I always ride on the sidewalks, unless there's someone walking and I'll go around. Those boys with the tight pants can play in traffic if they want, but personally I like to keep a few feet between myself and the cagers." |
Empirical evidence has shown you are much more likely to get hurt doing this than if you ride in traffic.
Quote : | "Like I said, it's the enthusiasts that ride right in the center of the damn highway that cause all the trouble." |
In the many many miles I've put on my bike in the past few years riding in the area, I have yet to see an "enthusiast" riding in the center of any highway with traffic around. In some cases it makes sense for a large group to take up some of the road. 10/30/2007 10:10:27 AM
