The fan on my laptop is rattling annoyingly loud nowadays. does anyone know roughly how much it costs to get repaired/replaced? 10/28/2007 3:33:47 PM |

It depends on the laptop, search ebay for "[insert laptop type here] fan" 10/28/2007 10:40:17 PM |

it's rattling?
if it's just running loudly, your system might be overheating. first thing I'd try is a can of air.
then a technician. replacing that fan could easily turn into a pain in the ass for you. 10/29/2007 2:26:49 PM |

What laptop do you have? If your mechanically inclined, you could probably do it yourself in 30 mins. If it's still under warranty, call your manufacturer. Should be covered in it, but definately try blowing some air in it to loosen and getting rid of pesky dust. Try not to get overboard as there are delicate parts in the laptop, specially ribbon cables. My friend did this and disabled his lcd. Took 2 hours to figure what the problem was. 10/29/2007 3:23:38 PM |

just to note, he didn't use a can of air, instead, his bright idea was to use his 30 gallon 125psi air compressor... on full blast... Not the smartest of fellows. 10/29/2007 7:36:20 PM |

I have a HP Pavillion dv5000. i got it last year. its not under warranty anymore, i opted out of the 2 or 3 year deals figuring if anything happened it would be cheaper to fix than $300.
Its rattling pretty loud but nothing feels hot on the comp. It sounds like the fan might just be misaligned or something. It only rattles when the fan is moving though so i know its the fan doing it. 10/29/2007 8:03:09 PM |

yeah, it's not too hard to do. I think the fan was like $60 for my mom's laptop(hp 4000 series). You should be able to go to the hp website and download a maintenance manual. 10/29/2007 9:27:53 PM |

$60 for a fan?! are you joking!?
That's not insane, that's stupid, unless you paid someone else to install it... anyway, here I did your research:
$15 Buy It Now: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?satitle=dv5000+fan
