Does anyone have any experience on this area? I will be starting school next year in Elkins Park, PA, which is just outside of Philly to the north. I am hoping to find some house or townhome to rent, outside of Phil, but can't seem to find anything but 1500/month 500 square feet apartments.

dont live in upper darby

you'll be killed.

there's all the time students or young professionals looking for roomates in the museum district or manayunk looking for housemates.

i'd live in manayunk if it weren't such a commute for me

that's not that close to where you're looking for, but the transit system makes it easier

I grew up in Hatboro- Horsham, so I'd definitely suggest Willow Grove and surrounding areas. Safe, great location, train will take you straight into the city, shopping is good... what listings are you looking at?

My mom's family is all from Upper Darby--- yeah, not that safe anymore

I'm used to waking up in the morning, watching the news and seeing at least one story about a murder over the night.

My block of west philly isn't too bad.

Yeah I don't want to live in Philly. I want to live to the north somewhere. Fort Washington, Warrington, Abington, Willow Grove?

I just moved back to NC last year from 4 years in Philadelphia. I lived the 1st year in NE Philly and then 3 years in Elkins Park. I too suggest Abington/Willow Grove if you can afford it. It's an excellent place to live.

If you can't find anthing in that area, check out Montclair Duplexes in NE Philly. I lived there for 1 year. It's not the nicest/newest thing, but it's safe, adequate, and was $715/mo for a 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment. Granted, this was 4 years ago but the price shouldn't have gone up that much. It's less than 10 min from PCOM.

Well, if you do get murdered, the cops won't be able to solve it now, but they'll put all of the evidence in a box, and 20-30 years from now, some witness with a conscience will come forward, teary eyed, and hand over the one critical piece of missing evidence to solve the case.

And the cops who solve it will look off into the distance and sees a vision of your ghost, and everyone gets a warm fuzzy.

I need to find a place soon... any websites I should be looking at (other than craigslist)?? I prefer it to be near West Point as possible so I don't have a retarded commute to work (anything >30 min is considered too long for me).

I moved to Philly for grad school- been here since August. Try to live in Bala Cynwyd, Lower Merion, Ardmore, or anywhere on the Main Line. Once you cross City Ave (highway 1) coming from West Philly it makes a world of a difference. The Main Line rent can be expensive but WELL worth it. I go to Saint Joe's- it's cool to know maybe I won't be the only kid in the Philly area with a WOLFPACK license tag. hit me up on PM if you have any questions.

and don't live in Manayunk. I mean, it's okay... but on Wednesdays through Saturday you won't be able to park your car because an insane amount of college kids flock to Manayunk to drink & party. Also, the streets are all on an incline, so when it gets icy it is impossible to drive on them. It's just a yucky, dirty area. It's relatively safe but like I said- everyone goes there to drink and party so sometimes it can get loud and crowded. BUT there is an awesome diner that's open 24 hours and there's really nothing like that in Ardmore or Bala.

Apartment prices in Manayunk are lower than Main Line prices though.

Cool places in the actual city- make sure you go to the Mutter Museum and Penn's Landing.
First Friday is awesome too, sometimes there's free wine & cheese.

Good luck!

Okay... visited to places in Manayunk tonight (friday night). I couldn't even find a place to park to see the 2nd place (Carson St). A lot of the houses were old and kind of beaten down. Fucking narrow ass streets, and yes everything there is on an incline, that's gota suck in winter.

Luckly, I just found a place in Hatboro that's very close to my work. House only 9 years old.

^^ I'm renting. I work in West Point, PA so Hatboro is a better location (10 min commute vs 45 min commute from Manayunk).

hammster it all depends on where you guys work. One thing a part of Manayunk (Carson St) area is good for is that it's like 2-3 blocks from the train station, so if R6 (Route 6) takes you to your work, it's a lot better -- just roll out of bed and walk to train station.

kk.. im retarded.. forgot your first post. Go look @ Google Map (link below). Pay attention to the SEPTA (the rail system and which lines goes where and pick a place near a station with a route that goes straight to Elkins Park. You do not want to drive during mornings.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Elkins+Park,+PA,+United+States+of+America&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

I've spent a full day here now, driving around and looking at different places. Btw, my new GPS car navigation thingy made the move as painless as possible. I just program in addresses and tell it to tell me how to get there.

WOW where? I know practically every place in Hatboro, that's where I grew up-- right off of York Rd and Summit Ave and my grandmother had that big house at the corner of east Moreland and Penn Ave across from the train station. I am so jealous of you, cause I really miss Hatboro

^ Okay my bad, it's not Hatboro. I live in Hatfield.

Went to Buckingham, PA this evening (Had to exchange a sports coat at Brooks Brothers -- for Xmas party & social functions at work). I love that area... i think I passed through Doylestown downtown on the way there. Doylestown downtown is really nice. It's like Chapel Hill downtown, but nicer (better kept) and several blocks of really nice shops.
