Quote : | "COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Stephen Colbert's fanciful White House bid took a real step Thursday before South Carolina Democrats quickly squashed his hopes, saying he wasn't a serious candidate. Colbert, who poses as a conservative talk-show host on the Comedy Central cable network, filed to get on the ballot as a Democratic candidate in his native South Carolina. His campaign paid a $2,500 filing fee just before the noon deadline, said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler.
However, after about 40 minutes of discussion by top party officials, the executive council voted 13-3 to keep the comedian off the ballot. The host of The Colbert Report wasn't the only hopeful nixed.
POLITICS BLOG: Why didn't he get in as Republican?
Little known New York real estate developer Henry Hewes also was not viewed as viable nationally and had not campaigned in the state, two key requirements for the party.

Colbert, who asked to be listed on the Jan. 26 ballot as Stephen "South Carolina" Colbert, appeared Sunday at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, telling several hundred fans he would, if elected, "crush the state of Georgia." He received a key to the capital city and the mayor declared him South Carolina's "favorite son."
Colbert later that day met with members of the party's executive council.
He also sent a two-page letter pleading to get on the ballot, noting he has already helped promote the state's peach crop and its schools and wanted to do more, saying the campaign can be about promoting the state.
"Can it be about South Carolina's Magood wild American shrimp, shrimp being better than the tainted Chinese job killers we ship in now? Yes!" Colbert wrote. "But I can't do that if you cut me off."
Waring Howe, a member of the executive council, said he was eager to keep Colbert off.
"He's really trying to use South Carolina Democrats as suckers so he can further a comedy routine," Howe said. And Colbert "serves to detract from the serious candidates on the ballot."
State Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter told the committee Colbert could showcase the state "in a way that none of the other candidates on the ballot have been able to do."
"I think you're taking this a little too seriously," she said.
When Colbert announced his candidacy on his show last month, he said he would run only in this key primary state. He said then he planned to run as a Democrat and a Republican — so he could lose twice.
The GOP filing fee is $35,000; the deadline was Thursday night." |
Damn it.

I guess I kinda understand it. They don't want a farce for their primary, they don't want to feel "unimportant" in this big game known as primary season.

all I'm saying is that this isn't some bullshit election. As much responsibility as the presidency holds, it should be taken seriously.

Quote : | "Stephen Colbert may have abandoned his brief bid for the White House, but he ended up in a three-way tie for a seat on the Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District Board.
His electoral success will be fleeting, however.
When the Williamsburg Electoral Board draws a name from a hat to decide the winner, Colbert's name won't be among the three: He's not a registered voter in the former colonial capital of Virginia.
Colbert, 43, and two students from the College of William and Mary each received three write-in votes in the November 6 election for a seat on the board that oversees natural resources.
Matt Beato, 20, a government major who chairs the college's student assembly senate, expressed concern over the write-in process.
"I'm not crazy, but any nut case could win with three votes," Beato said. "Somebody should make sure that doesn't happen."
Earlier this month, Colbert abandoned his bid for the presidency after the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council voted to keep the host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" off the state's primary ballot." |
