I'm going to be purchasing a new car in a few months and I wanted to start shopping around. My budget is going to be somewhere around the 6k-7k range. What makes and models are good for that price range? I really want something 99 or above (which I think is reasonable) and no more than 120,000 miles. Also, I have two kids, so there needs to be plenty of room for carseats, strollers, etc.

you can probably get a mazda protege 5 for that much money. 5 door, good on gas, fairly cheap to maintain, great reviews

99 dodge caravan.

not very good longevity, but some get lucky.

not as much room/quiet as the competition, not so good gas mileage, bit rough around the edges, but i'll do what you want.

You may be onto something there. If you can get over looking like a cop or an old person, they have TONS of room, are very safe, and tend to be pretty affordable. They're put together pretty well for a domestic, and the 2v 4.6 will run forever.

You'd be hard pressed to find Honda or Toyota minivans with low mileage for under $7,000. Even if you do, it's no guarantee of quality, as my family's Toyota Sienna blew the engine at 100,000miles.

Even Chrysler minivans are relatively in demand. SUV's are more expensive still.

Your cheapest bet is the surplus on Chapel Hill Road. Taurus, Impalas, Crown Vics and Caravans all go for anywhere from $2000 to $5000, depending on condition. If you don't mind a scratch here and there, and are willing to take the risk of buying a car without driving it, deals can be had. Mileage is almost always 100,000.

I've had a minivan once and I didn't like it so much. Perhaps it was just the kind (97 Nissan Quest), but we had lots of problems with it and I just didn't like driving it. I love Mazdas (we own a 93 MX-6 right now), so I will def be looking into the protege 5. Thanks for all the advice so far...keep it coming!
