So, several years ago I took several pictures of red-tails at the Dan Allen deck. One of them killed a squirrel, flew it up into the third floor of the deck, and ate it while three of its buddies flew up. Then they each took turns eating the thing. This is the only picture I can find now:
Somewhere I have several more, but I can't find them at the moment. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else knows them to be social like this? As far as I can tell, there wasn't a major age difference between the four (one of them is not in that picture, but it didn't look any different). But damned if they didn't take turns and share that squirrel, with me standing just a few feet away the whole time. 11/9/2007 3:00:13 AM |

when I was living in Wolf Village there was one on a bench one day that let me walk within 2 or so feet and didn't move:

thats pretty awesome; i've seen hawks catch shit before.
Speaking of birds of prey; some buddies of mine have a jet ski and were cruising around part of the Chesapeake bay last summer. At one point they took a tight turn and sprayed one of those buoys used to help navigate ships. Apparently a osprey had its nest there and took offense to be sprayed. They said the bird went after them and chased them for nearly 2 miles as they gunned the jet ski up to full throttle to get away. 11/9/2007 10:45:49 AM |

A few years ago I saw a redtail hit a little song bird mid flight, no more than 20 feet away....it looked like the little bird exploded when the hawk hit him, feathers everywhere. 11/9/2007 11:12:02 AM |

We saw a couple of hawks snag dinner while we were on the Mississippi. Saw an eagle fly over the river with a snake still trying to fight its way out. Better than TV I tell ya!

There used to be a bunch of hawks that would hang out in the trees in between Sullivan, Lee, and Bragaw. They were always harassing the squirrels.
Watched a Bald Eagle come in over the water and casually snatch a fish out at Jordan Lake. That was pretty cool to watch. It looked so effortless. 11/9/2007 2:35:21 PM |
