Raleigh — The Highway Patrol is launching another crackdown on speeding drivers.
Troopers will target interstates and major-four lane highways across the state as part of Operation Slow Down, which kicks off Tuesday. Troopers said there will also be increased patrols on secondary roads.
The crackdown comes just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, when thousands of people were expected to hit the road.
Motorcycles, patrol cars, unmarked cars and helicopters will be used in the effort to get drivers to ease up on their speed.

A radar detector is worthless unless you have a little common sense. If you expect just the radar detector to save your ass constantly, then you're going to get caught sooner than later. And I think people who travel well under the speed limit on I40 are more of a hazard than those doing 80-90.

After all the money from the tickets goes to the schools the NC legislature is free to reduce the school budget and reapply the funds as "needed."
And tickets are only $15 The last one I got in '96 was more than that. I would have imagined that they were much more expensive nowadays.

You'd be surprised. I got stuck behind at least two people going sub 55 (in the left lane) on the way into work this morning. No telling how many were going sub 55 in the right lane.

Eh or going speed limit in left lane and not paying attention.
On my commute today there was a large SUV in the left lane going speed limit. Coming up behind it I could see the sun visor down and vanity mirror light on. Yup. Putting on makeup in the left lane going speed limit. Niiiice.

the NHCP must be behind on its quota for the month. Gotta make that extra revenue. Go get those speeders cops!! I hope you feel like you did your civic duty by pullying grandpa going 76 in a 65; busting a group of kids sitting around smoking green eating cheetos, harrassing college kids just trying to drink a beer relaxing on the weekend, and busting an "illegal gambling operation" of WW2 vets sitting around betting on cribbage games (some news article from last week).
If they are really interested in saving lives then they should pull the moron going 60 in the fast lane which is 10x more of a traffic hazard then someone going 80 down I40. Or they can nail idiots driving within the "tolerable" speed limit but are weeving in and out of lanes; riding peoples asses.

you know i would actually bet that if speeding has anything to do with it, it's that when someone is speeding, they have to fucking change lanes 37 times because of fucking retards in the left lanes who don't understand that if you AREN'T PASSING SOMEONE YOU DON'T BELONG THERE 11/13/2007 12:00:13 PM

haha, that doesn't imply you should be doing it at 20 mph over the speed limit--contrary to popular belief, nc really isn't fascist about speeding, try living in virginia 11/13/2007 12:54:33 PM

Cherokee All American 8264 Posts user info edit post |
you're right about virginia,
but, speed limits could be higher if it was more certain that people would stay in their lanes except when passing.
my whole argument however goes back to how we even get our driver's licenses. 6 hours behind the wheel, 30 hours in class. something about that is wrong to me. truck drivers go through a decent amount of class and driving to get their licenses, why shouldn't the general public? i mean it's obvious that a large % of people are completely incompetent when it comes to driving. someone from overseas made a good point to me, about how we have so much room around here and such large distances to travel that we treat it as sort of a day dream whereas in places like nyc and europe you have to actually concentrate because the traffic is so congested.
and my final note, when i was driving in nyc, it was the greatest experience ever, not only because it was hilarious, but because of how efficient it was, you got where you need to go, quickly, with absolutely NO problems. down here is a different story as people take the time to stare out the window at the pretty grass and look for their cell phones and fumble around in the back seat with shit

But its so much easier to sit in your cruiser cop car eating a doughnut and let a nifty electrical contraption tell you when someone is "breaking the law" going 71 in a 65 so you can bust them. To much brain power is involved in looking for people that are the real threats to life on the road. granted someone going 100 on I40 deserves to get pulled in most situations.
Look at other forms of police work. Why try to catch real criminals when you can make your self look like Top Cop having issued a lot of citations by walking down the sidewalk of brent road handing out drinking tickets to every underage college kid that walks by.
I'll agree though NC is not nearly as big of speed nazi's as VA. Also, the driving requirements should be a lot stricter.

I find it hard to believe that accidents could be caused by non-moving cars. So i guess speed is the leading cause of accidents.

and that jackass is weaving in and out of traffic because the other jackass doesn't know that slower traffic should keep right.

haha, wth, what you're effectively saying with the whole omg the world would be a better place if people kept right bullshit is "everybody else should stay the fuck outta my way", which would be great, except that it's never gonna happen and laws penalizing the slower drivers won't really change anything for the same reason that speeding laws don't keep people from speeding 11/13/2007 1:45:35 PM

go drive in europe one good time and you'll see why it sucks so bad here... everybody gets the fuck out of your way there. everybody drives in the right lanes until they're about to pass someone. it really is extremely nice and more efficient... the no speedlimit thing in some places between germany and paris was kinda cool too ![](images/smile.gif) 11/13/2007 1:51:43 PM

Some of these are hilarious.
"A Trooper placed a female, who he had stopped for speeding, in his patrol car. Following this traffic stop, the Tropper obtained the female's telephone number and began calling her residence and, on one occasion, went to her residence uninvited. He also obtained personal information about the female from the apartment manager by being in unifor and stating that he was a "family friend."
3 Days suspension w/o pay."
"Admitted to exposing his penis to and kissing a female acquaintance who was seated in the passenger side of his vehicle. He also admitted that the female exposed her breasts to him. The exposures occurred while the Trooper was on duty and in uniform.
3 Days suspension w/o pay."
"Admitted to making approximately 22 threatening phone calls to his ex wife and threatening to kill her; admitted to making 22 threatening phone calls to his ex wife and, although did not recall threatening to kil her, did not deny doing so. In May of 2002; Admitted to using his blue lights in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop involving his ex wife even though there was no violation of law; and, on the same occasion stopped his ex wife without lawful reason and issued her a warning ticket and, violated patrol policy by turning his issued in-car camera off during the traffic top; all of this activity occurred in May 2002.

Quote : | "18) Largely due to the increased use of soft body armor, better training and improved equipment, police deaths have been on the decline for the past two decades. During the 1980’s we averaged 187 officer fatalities each year, and in the 1990’s we averaged 153. At the same time that deaths were declining, the number of law enforcement officers in our nation grew substantially from roughly 315,000 officers in 1970 to an estimated 740,000 serving today.
