my old one burnt out....won't eject, won't read whats in it.

should i try and buy a new one, install myself

or

take it somewhere and have it repaired?

How old is it? If its less than a year old you still have the warranty OR you could just send it in and say you got the 3 red rings of death. They'll more than likely replace the xbox.

Didn't Microsoft extend the warranty to three years from date of purchase?

If you buy a new one, you would need to be sure you get the same type of drive as you had before, since (at least the last few generations of 360s) have had the motherboards tied to drive types.

Honestly, I'd call Microsoft and see what they have to say. Considering how good they are about the RRoD warranty they might help you out.

Or I mean, you could just cause the thing to RRoD itself then send it in.

^I think some people make HD-DVD drives you can install into your xbox to replace it.

I don't believe the HD DVD drive plays games. I'm also pretty certain it wouldn't fit inside the case anyway.
