there was an attempted theft the other night on a 1996 acura integra. the perp(s) used 2 screwdrivers to pry back at the top of the door, then hit the power lock with something and got in

they were very good at what they were doing. got right in (it took a locksmith a long time to do this), knew exactly what to pull off, and they had the ignition switch unscrewed and pulled out. basically they knew the car well. after the cops and CSI left, we started messing with the car, and got it started in 2 seconds with a house key on the left side in the ignition switch. then we realized the only reason it didnt get stolen was because the steering wheel lock was not bypassed. so they just stole the radio intstead (they didnt cut any wires, but carefully removed the sony stereo and the acura harness). once again pointing the finger at someone with a very similar car...

ANYWAYS, they tried not to break anything since they were prepared to steal it, so they popped the top part of that ignition/wheel cover thing off, then ripped the bottom part (with the 3 screws) out of it.

so the only real damage is to that bottom part. its only like 30 bucks through acura. but figured i'd see if any of you had access to one for cheap/free - cause a penny saved is a penny earned!!1. may the force be with jew. i think the part is 1994-1997 (maybe up to 99) but the car is 96. respond here or [preferably] PM me, as i tend to forget about real stuff on here and never check.

No kidding. What I'm wondering is this: why the hell didn't they snatch the lock cylinder with a slide hammer?

And why in the hell didn't they use wood shims or an inflatable pouch to provide back access to the door lock assembly at the base of the window?

The later ones are harder to break into than the earlier ones.

My Teg was an '87. One of the easiest cars that I've ever seen to break into. My absolute favorite CD player (A Sony Mobile ES 600DSP with surround; rare and expensive in '97) was stolen out of it. NO signs of forced entry...just a door ajar and a gaping hole in the dash. I almost cried; Sony hasn't made one like that since that I know of.

The lock cylinder on the door is a lot harder to defeat on the newer ones, though, because it has an anti-freewheel feature unless the proper key is inserted. You usually have to pop the rod loose to even move it. But if it's a dance you know well, it only takes a few seconds.

Ignition lock cylinder is a little different; you can actually take the whole cylinder off quickly if you have a cordless drill and the right bits. Honda uses break-off bolts to assemble them, so it takes a little effort to get 'em out.

are you talking about the plastic part under the steering column. i may have an extra. but im not sure, i had a parts car that i think my boss tossed out from his shop.

if those guys were any good, they would have just used two hands and turned the wheel as hard as they could and it would have busted the steering wheel lock.

ehhh, not really. these integras are stolen daily. the parts from the integra fit in civics and other integras without any modifications whatsoever. if that car was stolen, then you would have found the stolen parts in a civic most likely.

That's the preferred method of my autoshop teacher in high school. We ripped the ignition out of a Corolla after he lost the keys. You could start it with a screwdriver.

the newer tegs have immobilizers. but you can still bypass those

They require RF transponder keys...I don't know how to bypass them. What do you have to do?

well you bypass them by taking another ECU to plug in.

yeah, i know its a NGR way.

but i havnt found how to bypass the normal way.

there is a chip on the ECU that if you remove it, it disables the immobilizer, i did this to get my blue integra running. but it throws a check engine light. i eventually put another ECU in there.

i dont know if its called steering lock or immobilizer or what, all i know is that it was so easy for us to start on the left side in the cylinder with a house key knowing nothing about cars.. we figure either they had it started and the lock defeated their dumb brains, or someone scared them off by coming outside to smoke or something at that exact time.

either way, heres the funny part. there was a spare key left in the car (dont ask) that they had clear sight of and access to once inside the car. but they never thought to try that key. and yes it was a big ole acura key

anyways. they are apparantly an easy easy steal, and to all the ppl saying they doubt the theif wanted that car for parts.... there were much nicer cars around than a 12 year old teg.... much nicer. maybe this was the easiest to steal on the area. the attempted theft wasnt even noticed till the key was already in the ignition ready to go and the wheel seemed to be tilted down too far. no signs of forced entry until close inspection afterwards


cops got good prints though, off parts like mirrors that i know arent touched by anyone. lets hope CSI miami sunglasses guy gets em!

well they arent gonna go after nicer cars because they are generally harder to take.

plus, like i mentioned. the market for parts from an acura are very very high.

yeah, at the end of the key cylinder there is this black piece that screws into the metal cylinder, 2 very small phillip head screws. if you unscrew that, you can even use a penny, or something that fits in that slot to turn the "ignition".

ive misplaces my keys and have had to unscrew that piece numerous times to get the car started.

^^ those 2 screws were in the floor, thats what we showed the cops, and thats how we knew something came up to scare them off and we could start it right up.

they took those screws out, but popped off the bottom cover with 3 in it. they also know that you cant print one of those. fuckers.

I remember after Hurricane Fran, I was helping friends and fellow church members clean up debris and cut up trees...

A friend of mine (elderly man) has a Massey Ferguson 245, and he's not as spry as he used to be. He actually took a door spring and put it on the clutch pedal to make it easier to use.

And I'm telling you, he could flat out do CRAZY things with that tractor. Clutched it just as easy as pie.
