Okay here's the thing...
I'm going to set up a machine to use as a DVR, using vista premium.
Will i be able to record HBO/CINEMAX/ETC movies?
How is this possible, as i was under the impression a cablebox was needed to decrypt the signal for these channels? 11/16/2007 11:22:03 AM |

umm.... do you subscribe to those channels? just using a Windows MCE doesn't magically give you the ability to watch premium channels 11/16/2007 11:27:12 AM |

i don't even think the twc dvr box even works for that, but if you get it to work let us know! also you might to hit up some av forums to get the low down scoop on hacks for this.

^^ i just know one time we had a pay per view movie that could not be dvr'd so i thought maybe premium channels would do the same 11/16/2007 11:44:01 AM |

i pay for the channels
but i thought it was the box that allowed me to watch them
therefore if i bypass that box to use my PC for DVRing, will them still be viewable? 11/16/2007 12:15:52 PM |

no, you can't do that. Those channels are encrypted. You'd have to either pass the signal from your box to your PC, or get a CableCard to work with your PC (good luck w/that). 11/16/2007 12:18:23 PM |

things to keep in mind. You will need a digital set top box for any channel above 125. Also if you plan on streaming it to a tv through a media center extender it is blocked on premium channels like HBO. There is a fix/patch to by pass this floating around on the internet. Haven't messed with that in years.

DRM will prevent you from watching the media center recording on another computer, but...
You can transcode the video and watch it elsewhere. Or use a linux MythTV backend to record your shit. no drm. 11/16/2007 2:24:22 PM |
