Wait... who said they were?
If someone is paying more for just a video card than people do for a whole console, then they would be getting ripped off if the console was more powerful graphically.
Well, they are getting ripped off, but it would be even worse. 11/19/2007 12:15:26 PM

i thought this was obvious
however, consoles games are written to get 95% or so out of the equipment
pcs are hindered by the variability of equipment 11/19/2007 12:18:06 PM

for the money..i'll just stick to console...
i can drop 600 bucks on a decent PC and 400 on a console and be happy rather than 2k on some wild PC where the only good game genre is FPS 11/19/2007 12:19:27 PM

500-600 if you can wait for the 8800GT to reach it's real pricing point of $199. You can get mid-level C2D for under ~$150 and RAM + Mobo for ~$100 + a decent PSU for ~$60. Add a case and some cooling and you can keep it under 600 to play Crysis. The 8800GT does very well in Crysis considering what I play it set at on a 939 X2 4200+ and a 8800GT. (1920x1200 all settings high except medium shader and post processing w/ custom cfg)

why would I want to spend $400-500 on a graphics card that will be outdated within a year (outdated in this case being where games come out that your card can no longer handle)
...or even spend that much on all the parts necessary for an entire computer when the same result is inevitable in a short period of time....the consoles absolutely don't have the advantage graphically, but at this point in the game we're close to splitting hairs...COD4 is a good example of my point...anybody that says that game doesn't awesome on a console is a retard

^^ are you fucking retarded? I play Crysis at the above levels on a ~$700 system and someone with a C2D could do it even better for less than 700. However if you want to buy a nice monitor and all the peripherals it will cost you around a grand.
^I'll be using the eVGA step up program to get the new 1GB G92 8800GTS for only 40 bucks. However the 8800GT is still a hell of a fucking card for the price and it won't be beat for a long time. Stock should be up in less than a few weeks according to Nvidia. The 256mb model is also coming out which will sell well also.

Case in point right there....in order to handle the graphics of a single game (and arguably all the games that have come out before with lesser graphics) you've spent more than either console costs
While the graphics are better, 6-12 mo. down the road it's inevitable that another game(s) will be out that have every pc gamer scrambling to upgrade so they don't have to run the game on lowered settings 11/19/2007 12:38:45 PM

step up program, that's pretty cool and a good deal then
well, here's my experience
the card on my dad's computer couldn't play a COD or MOH game i got him, so we go out and get a decently priced nVidia, 130. It worked fine, but we didn't get any games after that for a while. now if i wanted to get him COD4, I'd have to get a whole new system. Or i could get him a 360 and be set for years, when the next generation comes out (that's fuckin crazy to think about).
For myself I have a laptop that can't play the BioShock demo. Go out and buy a brand spanking new desktop, or a 360.
For computer vs console, its not 'which looks better' unless you're talking about the day of the console's release, pretty much. Its about availability, cost, and how dedicated you are to having the best looking game. 11/19/2007 12:42:28 PM

^^^^ incorrect, if you follow gaming you'd know we have increase and then a leveling out of graphics until a completely redesigned engine comes out. Most of the games being released during any period of time are based off of less than 6 engines currently on the market. Engines do not come out but every 3-4 years, so after all the big boys get released like Crytek and U3, it will be awhile before extreme hardware upgrades are needed. Also remember that the next console generation will only be able to do what the PC is doing right now, the PC will always be in the lead considering our hardware never becomes stagnant.

whats funny is that 360 vs pc graphics is really not much differnet. pc fanboys act like its soooooooooooo ugly unless its on a pc. i find this quite funny when all they mainly talk about is graphics when you really can't tell the difference. 11/19/2007 12:46:28 PM

to play this gone with every setting completely maxed out you need 2k
that is playing @ max resolution @ 40-50 fps
you cant do it for less 11/19/2007 12:47:39 PM

No consumer level system can play Crysis completely maxed out at full resolution right now. It would be dumb to even try it inside of any budget, the Crytek engine is too far ahead of the current hardware. When the new Quads get released from Intel and the Nvidia 9 Series comes out this will be a different story. For right now everyone is just enjoying what we can do with Crysis tweaked to our systems, I can't believe how good it looks.
^ see the above screenshot and if you can't see a difference in HD-DVD and DVD then you are blind and shouldn't consider yourself at all into picture clarity and image quality. You probably still use a projection screen, which is fine, but don't argue graphics is that is really your opinion of high definition.

i JUST said hddvd was 6x clearer, do i need to be any clearer ?

COD4, UT3, Crysis, TF2, HL2:EP2, Quake Wars (native to PC, some ported to 360) just to name a few shooters released recently, PC Gaming is just as abundant in games as 360 and especially more than PS3.

Wow. Why all the "one game" talk when referring to the PC gaming market. If you pick up that card it should last several years. I've been on the same GFX card for 3 years now and I could have picked it up a good year sooner than I did. It had a good 4 year life span, which is close to the original x-box.
Then again my interests have never been running games at max detail, just playing them.
Some of the price of the computer is absorbed by other activities that I do on the PC. I look at it this way... I was going to have a PC either way, so comparing prices comes down to the price of a console and the difference between the PC I would have bought and the PC I ended up buying in order to play games. Many times that comes down to the GFX card alone.
So $200- $250 for a decent GFX card that might last me anywhere from 3-4 years isn't that bad a deal IMO.
All this said, consoles are the way to go to get to next gen graphics quickly and cheaply. 11/19/2007 1:00:41 PM

^^ I got my mobo for 35 bucks and it does awesome, there is a lot of overclocking potential and speed increase in simplified budget gaming motherboards. ASRock Dual SATA-II is the one I went with for the full speed AGP and PCI-E capabilities and it performs up there with the top 939 mobos. You can easily find DDR2 for under 65 bucks for 2 gigs (50 bucks 2GB Corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034) and I said ~$100 because I'm not sure how much you need to spend for a good C2D mobo considering I haven't looked at them. I'm waiting for the new Quads.
