free gym, free car washing, free dry cleaning, free preschool, free day care, discounted admission for your kids to Cary Academy, onsite Doctor, private window office for everyone - stuff like that. 35 hour work-weeks? is that still in effect? Also, Jim Goodnight, the founder and CEO, leaves the campus gates by 5:00 every day and expects others to follow soon after (at least that's what he told us when he spoke at my graduation in Dec 02). of course, he lives on campus, so I guess he has no reason to actually "leave the gates", so maybe it was metaphorical
they have their own little world up there in northeast Cary. Maybe some of you guys who work there can update the map here with other places on SAS Campus http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=35.82439&lon=-78.765235&z=16&l=0&m=a&v=2

free gym - yes, and it's awesome, like 13,000 sq. ft.
free car washing - no, it's not free, but it's fairly cheap. they suspended it because of water restrictions though.
free dry cleaning - nope. brothers comes and picks it up, but you still gotta pay for it, and you get a discount.

Jim Goodnight was my graduation speaker in Dec 02. Good speech. He said a few things (i can't exactly remember what, now) that were definitely considered "non-PC" that had the faculty squirming behind him. Something about how many Indians or Chinese the engineering school had, or something. Nothing derogatory, and nothing untrue either, but of course it's considered non-PC just to bring it up.
My bro's grad speaker the next year was Phil Donahue...... I think i won out on that one.... 12/3/2007 5:00:09 PM |

i get the free gym, the free healthcare, and the 35-hour work week working for the university...free preschool and discounted tuition at CA doesn't apply to me as i don't have any kids
i get all kinds of discounts as a university employee...heck if i know what they are, though
and i wear sandals/flipflops and jeans to work most days (depends on whether or not i have a meeting)...and i quite seriously doubt they'd pay more for what i do here than ncsu already pays me
that said, i've heard amazing things about SAS, but i can't come up with anything that would make me drool over a job there
when SAS offers free grad school, i'll get excited...until then, working for ncsu is way more beneficial to me in every way compared to SAS

i find it amusing that you think you know what i make and how that compares to industry standard...there's no way in hell SAS would pay double or triple what i'm making here for the same job with the equivalent benefits (as i've noted, a bunch of useless benefits don't count as actual benefits as they, technically, do not benefit me)...just because you made crap at the university, doesn't mean everyone else does, too
additionally, my field is downright saturated...there are dozens upon dozens of people who can do my job, and there's no way SAS would want me (or anyone in particular) to work for them...i say that in that they're not going to actively hunt down someone (note the difference between specifically asking someone to work for you and applying/accepting a job offer)
i've said that i've heard great things about SAS...but it's so very subjective - SAS can't match what i get from the university (realistically, anyway...sure they could pay me a million bucks a year, but that's not realistic)...when i leave here, the next person will make significantly less, i promise you
how much vacation/sick do you get? because i get a week and a half off at christmas/new year's, all university holidays, 2 sick days per month and 2 vacation days per month...and, i don't know how this works in non-government work, but after 5 years of state service, i can quit and still get full health coverage at retirement, without contributing a damn thing out of my paycheck (save for TSERS stuff, but i'm pretty sure that's only in regards to retirement, not health coverage)

dude..... just stop.
there is no need to turn this into a pissing contest between working at SAS or NC State.
It sounds like you have a job that you enjoy at NC State. congratulations, hold on to it. I guess not all of us can be, uhhh.... as lucky as you.
and you can't really compare the vacation/sick days for private vs. public jobs, especially at schools. Schools, by their nature, have more time off than industry. you know.... because school work around school-year schedules, and industry has to work year-round.
Quote : | " additionally, my field is downright saturated...there are dozens upon dozens of people who can do my job

ummm, does not compute. so you're saying..... you do a job that requires a low-enough barrier that "dozens of dozens" of people could do it, and yet NC State hold on to you for no discernible reason, and pays you well above what they would pay anyone else? Like I said - congratulations. You are not the norm. Most of us have to deal with, you know, supply and demand. We get paid what we're worth, depending on how good we are at our jobs and how many others can perform that task at or above our level.
Quote : | "i've said that i've heard great things about SAS...but it's so very subjective " |
and no, it's not "subjective". Most of the benefits from SAS can be directly translated into dollar amounts or savings. That's call "objective", not "subjective". And just because some of the benefits don't apply to you (like child care), that doesn't mean it's subjective, that just means it's non-applicable to you.12/3/2007 8:42:09 PM |

i don't mean for it to be a pissing contest...95% of the people would prefer working at SAS over any state job...but it's people like you that kind of annoy me...your post talking about all the "perks" offered by SAS, half (literally) of which were stupid hype and bullshit that you believed...windowed offices for everyone? seriously, that's the dumbest shit ever, unless their buildings are very tall and very slender (which they're not, because common sense says that'd be stupid)...SAS is an excellent company to work for, no doubt
you're right, you can't all be as lucky as me...i know what my job's worth, and i cherish it, though i don't particularly like it
i can definitely compare my off-days to those offered by a private company...why wouldn't i? a day off is a day off is a day off...or are you choosing which perks and benefits are to be considered? so my extra days of vacation don't count, but paid childcare (despite the fact that i cannot use it) does count? that's just dumb
Quote : | "ummm, does not compute. so you're saying..... you do a job that requires a low-enough barrier that "dozens of dozens" of people could do it, and yet NC State hold on to you for no discernible reason, and pays you well above what they would pay anyone else? yes, that's exactly what i'm saying...welcome to the SPA system (versus EPA) offered by state government...i consider this one of my perks - a pay raise every year, and no way to let me go unless i really suck at my job or do something awful...actually, it's a dumb system from a financial point of view, but it's also a bit intimidating working in an environment where you know you can be replaced with someone who will work for less money (like a lot of private companies do)

okay, then, what's the dollar amount or savings associated with childcare or discounts at cary academy to someone without children? how much is that worth to me? if it's worth nothing to me, but worth something to a coworker with 3 kids, that is indeed a subjective "benefit"...it is in no way "beneficial" to me, but very "beneficial" to him...maybe we're talking about two different things, but by the definition of a benefit (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=benefit), the benefits offered by ncsu are FAR above those offered by SAS

I interviewed there for an internship a while ago, and they took me on a tour. Some of the building are, yes, tall and slender, and all the offices in those buildings border the edge of the building and are windowed. The centers of the buildings are hollow, like an atrium, with a big glass roof to get natural light into most of the building, and trees and vines and stuff through the center of the building, then a common-area/lobby on the first floor. Kind of like an Embassy Suites, if you've been in one of those. I guess not all of the buildings are like that. maybe I misunderstood what my interviewer told me, or maybe I got false information on one of the tours i went on. However, the article above points out that Goodnight is a proponent of giving all employees and office. So maybe it would be more correct to say "almost all employees have their own office, and many/most of those offices have windows"

yeah, your dollar savings is $0. That still doesn't make it "subjective". It's a benefit offered to all employees. If you cannot take advantage of the benefit, it does not make that benefit subjective in value. It just makes it valueless to you.
Quote : | "you're right, you can't all be as lucky as me...i know what my job's worth, and i cherish it, though i don't particularly like it" |
I obviously just need to stop arguing..... i'm talking to a guy who doesn't like his job, but he gets paid way too much to do it and can't get fired. seriously - the rest of us in the real world who are trying to make a living by doing something we like, at a fair market rate, just can't compete with that. You win.
edit - look at this wikimapia link again. http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=35.82218&lon=-78.754501&z=18&l=0&m=a&v=2 look at Buildings S, U and T over on the East side. See how they are all kind of long and narrow? Zoom in closer and see how each of them is about 3-4 car lengths wide? Doesn't that look like the perfect width for having window-offices all the way around the edges and having an open-air atrium in the middle?

Guess what ... there are places around here that are better places to work than SAS and pay more too... (sorry if this comes as a reality check)
Just a little FYI.
Some people dont need the "perks" of SAS.
For example,
I dont need childcare, thats why I have a wife J/K, but not really. My employer offers "almost free" healthcare(with several options to choose from) Gym -- yup stock ... do you get that at SAS?? just curious... ESPP ... do you get that at SAS?? just curious...
opportunity for 6figure salary as a new college grad ... do you get that at SAS?? just curious...
Im sure for MANY people, SAS might be a dream job, but I think quagmire02's point is a legit one... and that is that SAS is not EVERYONEs dreamjob, just some peoples, so lets not act like God himself created that company for the sake of those privileged enough to get a job offer... At the end of the day, its still a job, and we would all rather be doing something else with our time 12/4/2007 10:07:02 AM |

^^^ Yeah, exactly ... some people want to get pats on their back and feel good about themselves while they are at work ... and to them, that is a perk.
Others don't care what they do, as they enjoy knowing that they are getting paid more than most people to do that job. I think I fall into that category as well. However, i feel lucky since I love what I do on most days, and still get paid what I consider to be top pay for a college grad.
