[blog][bitterness]...but, like all of the other jobs I have been accepted for, it is a) shitty and b) in Chapel Hill. Owing to some unpleasantness with my girlfriend/roommate, I no longer live anywhere near Chapel Hill, and owing to the shittiness of that town, I have no intention of moving back to Chapel Hill.
So, of the thirty or so jobs I have applied for in Greensboro (where I live) and Raleigh (where I'd like to live), I have been accepted to zero.
Of the five or so jobs I applied for in Chapel Hill, I have been accepted to five or so, all since I left.

Poli Sci undergrad degree from NCSU? Not a ticket to instant jobitude. I understood that going in. But I thought it would at least be a ticket to some sort of even mediocre jobitude within, oh, seven months. 11/23/2007 10:41:18 PM |

I like Chapel Hill, its clean and has little crime. Its public schools are top notch and its got a lot of cool little restaurants like Breadmen's and Elmo's. 11/23/2007 10:41:28 PM |

Yeah, that's great, except I don't have kids to make me worry about public school, and the restaurants (and everything else there) are expensive as holy hell. I've done an item-by-item comparison between CH and Raleigh, and CH has consistently proven itself to be significantly more expensive. 11/23/2007 10:42:43 PM |

Aren't you telemarketing for some alumni group though?
Also, have you seen this thread: http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=491999 11/23/2007 10:43:06 PM |

I did the telemarketing thing for about three months, but I quit because I could never wash myself enough to feel clean afterwards. And before you say, "Well, you can't be picky like that," bear in mind that you can only qualify for that job if you're an undergrad, which I'm not.
And I've seen the thread. I'm one of the people that asked SkiSalmon about that, months ago. I applied to go to the Ukraine and got nothing back. 11/23/2007 10:44:41 PM |

^^^ You're a relatively intelligent buy, but it seems for what you want to do, experience is more important than your degree.
I would recommend, for maybe more of a medium-term type of thing, to go back to school and get a degree in something more practical, that could possible lead to inroads to the political arena. Possibly something in business or finance where you work with lobby groups, gov. contractors, or even research think tanks.
If only you could use TWW as a reference

It's not even really an issue of wanting to make a target amount. Basically, if I'm gonna be doing something that will in any way improve my resume for the kind of things I want to do in life, I can work for subsistence or less (having some respectable savings).
BigMan -- hell, PM me, let's see if this is a good match.
moron -- Eventually, I will come back to school, but it will be to do graduate work, and it will be to do it in a similar concentration to my current one. I would much rather just stick it out and wait for a little luck than go get a degree in something I hate. 11/23/2007 10:56:11 PM |

No, ass
My roommate was my girlfriend
As in, I lived with my girlfriend.
Hence the "/" instead of "and." Long story short we shared a place but she kept it because she needed to stay there for school and I hated the town any goddamn way. 11/23/2007 11:00:40 PM |

What was your concentration in again?
Another option you have is striking out on your own.
Between youTube and the popularity of blogs, if you can think of an interesting thing to investigate, and find an interesting (but credible) way to depict (which I predict you can do) and then get a blog to link to you, you could become well known that way, and probably meet a lot of people.

... For example, if you could compile hard, statistical evidence that was mathematically fool proof between immigration and economics, and created pretty graphs in excel, or a nice powerpoint, and get someone like moveon.org to publish it, you'd become pretty well known, especially in todays environment.

I suppose it's worth it just to kill my time, but my very strong suspicion is that if cold facts were enough to get attention it would have already been done. Everything you need for something comparable to what you just described can be found on a handful of government websites. Anything more requires having some "in" denied to most people, and that, I'm afraid, I don't have, except when it comes to defaming politicians in Greensboro. 11/23/2007 11:06:07 PM |

you should go to a couple of the temp services here in greensboro. i know at least 2 of the top companies for professionals that work closely with some of the temp services in town, and do temp to hire with them all the time. you have to work something like 500 hours before the company can buy you out - but you can get bought out for normal salary, and in the meantime you can get a decent hourly rate.

Amsterdam, let me make this clear
Whether you are a total fabrication or not, I hate you
I hate you more than I hate anyone else who has ever posted on the wolfweb, and that includes steve9194, the fucking hitlerite mouthpiece
I would pay at least fifty dollars for the chance to whack you in the balls with a sack of oranges. Then, while you lay clutching your shattered testicles, I would take a dump on your face. If time permitted, I would go on to impregnate your mother. If she's too old to impregnate, I would switch to her ass at the last minute and go until she bled. And all of this remains true, even if your mother is already dead.
Likewise, all of this remains true whether you are a fabrication or not. I don't care. 11/24/2007 1:17:48 AM |

As I've covered a couple of times in this thread, including the OP, I no longer live in or even remotely near Chapel Hill. The job would have to be damn good for me to want to commute three hours round trip every day. Even if I moved to Raleigh and took the Chapel Hill job, it'd be a 70+ mile commute every day for a job whose pay is simply not commensurate with that sort of expense.

i tried to get some resumes in for a few greensboro kids on here and i think only one got a call so i dont have any pull i guess.... cause they farmed like 5 people from a temp service around that time..
lincoln financial seems to go with the temp to hire thing as well. i guess cause they get a 500 hour test drive before they make you an offer. but i think its something lots of places are doing now. and dont think youd have to take a cut because you have a degree with one of those places. i remember seeing temp bulletins asking for responses from "degree only" people. 11/24/2007 12:40:49 PM |

Why in the heck would you even begin to complain about a job offer in Chapel Hill?
I consider myself to have a good major, but all the job opportunities I'm looking at are at least 300 miles away. Location-wise, CH would be a no brainier. You know it's clean, wouldn't be a bad place to settle down at, it's a reasonable size with lots of bigger places close by, and on top of that, you have the luxury of actually being close to where you're from and family.
That all said, Chapel Hill is still gay. 11/24/2007 10:05:50 PM |
