So I'm doing this video game survey next semester. One of my questions is to ask respondents how long they have been playing video games, but I'm not sure what a good cap on that question is. I know for me, the answer is 12 years, but is that long, short, right in the middle? What is the range I should put on this? So I'm turning to my local geeky crowd to help answer that question for me. Besides, it's kind of a fun question so that we can figure out who has the least amount of a life.
How many years have you been playing video games? 11/27/2007 3:19:54 PM

haha, does that mean total, how many years of your life you have spent playing them if you add up every hour or whatever? or just time that has elaped since you first played a game until now 11/27/2007 3:21:33 PM

from ones born at least in 1978 or back you can count on most of them to say since the nes hit the shelves. 11/27/2007 3:23:09 PM

i think started around 5, i started playing seriously when i first played mortal kombat 1 at the arcade when i was 6. then got more serious when i discovered everquest when i was 14 (made me have no life for like 2 years in hs). so all in all, 16 years

Time elapsed since you first played a game is easier to measure. There are also other questions about current frequency, so if you played Super Mario when you were a kid but stopped playing after that, you don't register as a geek. There's way more to the survey than just this one question, but this is the one I was having trouble figuring out a good range for. 11/27/2007 3:32:55 PM

Seriously, folks, I wore out some Atari 2600s.
I still have my first computer at home from 1983. Texas Instruments 99/4A. I've also got the older version (black and polished aluminum) from '80 or '81, but I bought that as a package deal later on from a friend. 11/27/2007 3:46:06 PM

I first starting gaming on an Atari 2600 that my family had back in about 1987. My dad had some DOS computer too had had a few games on it (Golden Axe was one I remember distinctly, although I think that came later), so for about 20 yrs I would say. From then on it was a downhill spiral. Atari 2600 -> NES/Gameboy -> SNES/Gameboy -> N64 -> PS2/Gamecube/DS -> Wii/360
With PC gaming in there with all of them. 11/27/2007 5:07:00 PM

well over 20 years, although I don't really play anymore (until my nephew gets older, that is)
I still have issue #1 of nintendo power in a box somewhere
having subscribed shortly after getting my nintendo
I also played atari before that
and in the very early 80's (I'm told) I "played" games on my dad's apple II plus
oh yeah 11/27/2007 5:14:36 PM

Got my Atari 2600 in December of 1979, so that'd make 28 years. First game I ever played was Combat.
And wouldn't you know it, I've gone on to make a career of it. ![](images/biggrin.gif) 11/27/2007 7:37:24 PM
