Alright guys, we need to organize a garage meet to help zxappeal aka Dan pull the motor on his 280ZX. We're going to pick a weekend within the next month and just do it. Even if I'm the only one who show's up, we're gonna pull this motor.

Top 5 reasons why:

1. Dan always talks about his zx but nobody has ever seen the thing, or at least I haven't.

2. sweet project

3. sometimes the hardest part is getting started. once you start to see results, it motivates you to continue

4. Dan knows his shit but he's not the most organized guy

5. Good excuse to drink beer and wrench.

This weekend is out of the question. Too many people have exams etc, plus it's short notice. So that leaves Saturday the 15th, the 22nd, or the 29th. I vote the 15th, but let everyone chime in. I understand that there's no "perfect weekend" to do it where everyone's schedules work out, but you just have to pick one and accept that some people won't be able to make it, otherwise it will never get done.

Other things we need:

apparently it is missing wheels, I'm not sure how many though. some bullshit steelies will suffice. the Exxon on Hillsborough steet will have used tires and possible steelies, or if anyone has them lying around post up. Anyone know the bolt pattern?

We can use the superdodge to tow it and I'm pretty sure somebody on here has a trailor. Do we have an engine hoist and engine stand among us?

Actually, Jeepman has helped me out TONS. If anything, I owe him time and money. I definitely owe him money.

I'm down if you guys are down. This thing is a wreck of a project, so you might advise me to keep going to LKQ, or maybe not. I'm not above putting the time and effort into it.

Basically, I need 2 tires to move this thing. I've got wheels. I just need tires. 225/60R15 is what I need. Hell, 205 or 235 or whatever will work fine.

The catch right now is that the steering linkage is not hooked up. That's one thing I need to address when I yank the engine: rebuild the rack and pinion and replace the tie rod ends. It's manual, the way God intended.

i'll provide the tow, just let me know when/where. i've got a hoist/stand also.

i've got some tires that might work also. they're 225/75, but maybe that's close enough to put on the back or something just to get it rolling? i've also got some 195 rally tires, but i would need them back for derby season next year. if neither of those works, i'm sure i've got something suitable in my pile of derby car wheels/tires. just go over to the house and look.

I'm not sure at this particular point. Either at my house in Raleigh or at Jeepman's house. It all depends on who's got the most room and who wants to play host.

I have no problem doing it at my place, but I gotta ask Frac first. Because it's legally and technically HIS place!

BTW, I don't think I'd have a problem furnishing a keg and perhaps food. Or maybe a cooler full of beer. Whichever!

I have a hoist, so that's a no-brainer. I need to pick up a new stand. That straight six ain't the most stable on an el-cheapo stand, so I want to get a better one.

We both got air.

It won't be anything to yank the engine. Nothing's connected. I do want to yank the head (got two studs that need to be replaced, and the valvetrain needs some attention), and the header's got to go (not enough clearance to steering shaft).

There's really not a whole lot to do, but I do want to work on some of the bodywork and get the rack out to overhaul it.

It will be a good excuse to get together, drink some beers, eat some food, socialize, and do something with my car (FINALLY).

If we do it at Frac's, Friday night we can clean the place out to make it workable.

Now, as for the tires, the best thing would be for Dan to find his wheels this weekend. Then he or I could take them wherever to get some shitty tires mounted. Are there any other parts or tools that we absolutely need?

and a keg would be nice, but it's not necessary.

The more I think about it, the more I say fuck a keg. I like variety, and a lot of the shit I like doesn't come in kegs (well, not affordably, and not everybody likes it). So several coolers with a killer mix of cold burrrrr.

Maybe burgers and dawgs?

I know where my wheels are, I just need rubber for them. I can do that this weekend, I think. I'd like to clean and polish them up, but the more I think about it, the more I want to eventually go with 16" or 17" wheels, so fuck all that noise.

so it's looking like the 15th then. I'm thinking we can meet at Dan's/Frac's place or Matt's around noon. If the workspace needs to be prepped I volunteer to assist on Friday night. We will have to drive to Smithfield to get the car. There is a near 100% chance we can have the motor out though in one day as long as we don't get stuck not having one stupid part or tool or something.

I'm putting myself in charge of keeping track of whether we have the actual shit for the install. You guys can figure out food/beer/whatever.

so here is the checklist:

location for actual install: either Jeepman's or zxappeal's -- in progess.
preparing this location for install: This will have to be done beforehand or we will waste half the day possibly. I volunteer to help out. -- to do list
towing vehicle: zxappeal's SuperDodge. -- Check.
trailer: BigBlueRam -- Check.
hoist: zxappeal -- Check.
stand: zxappeal claims to be getting one. also Jeepman and 69(?) have possibly volunteered -- In progress.
wheels: zxappeal still needs to locate them. that is his task this weekend -- to do list.
tires: If zxappeal can't get any this weekend, I will acquire some from the Exxon and he can hit me back. -- to do list.

Food/refreshments: possibly BYOB, or we will all throw in on some stuff when we meet up.

Ray, in all reality, this is going to be all of a couple of hours, I'd be willing to bet. seriously, the engine is sitting in the car, on the mounts, and the tranny is in. There's no driveshaft in there right now, and nothing is hooked up to the engine. I would like to start tearing down the front end/head of the engine, but that won't really take long either.

The radiator will have to come out, and a couple of other things. Other than that, it's gonna be pie. I do want to pull the rack, but most of the steering linkage has been taken out too, so that will be fairly easy.

One thing I have been debating is whether or not to replace the hood. Back when I first painted the car, the hood was readily available, and for around 150 dolla. Now nobody carries it anymore (and if they do, it ain't cheap).

Oh, and another thing: I'll supply the majority of food and beer. You help, you get fed.

It's officially official. We're doing this at my place. It's a wreck, but arghx unwittingly volunteered to help me get things in some semblance of shape. Ray, you're a sucker for punishment, aren't ye?

I think we'll do burgers and beer. Hotdogs if I get a big enough vote. I might need a head count, so you fellas PM me if you wanna hang at Bleile und Platz Motorenwerkstatt whilst we butcher an already butchered ZX. It's really rough because it's been sitting for YEARS. There's a lot of work to be done before she hits the road again.

I'm looking forward to this.

Good question. I've gotta drive down to Smithfield and pick up the car. It's not gonna be easy to get on any trailer; it's got an airdam and it's a bit lower than stock.

We could crank things up between 11am and noon. That should give me plenty of time.

Votes?

Alright have we settled on whose stand we are using? We can do a head count next week. Also, if you put a series of wooden planks down to make a mini ramp it should get up there fine. That's what I've done when I've had my car towed.

Checklist:

time for install: December 15th, Saturday. Meet up around 11, bullshit around, then head to Smithfield to get the car? Or are you getting it beforehand? -- need to figure this out.
location for actual install: zxappeal's -- Check.
preparing this location for install: Myself and zxappeal either this weekend or the Friday before it goes down. -- to do list
towing vehicle: zxappeal's SuperDodge. -- Check.
trailer: BigBlueRam -- Check.
hoist: zxappeal -- Check.
stand: zxappeal claims to be getting one. also Jeepman and 69(?) have possibly volunteered -- Need to figure this out.
wheels: zxappeal still needs to locate them. that is his task this weekend -- to do list.
tires: If zxappeal can't get any this weekend, I will acquire some from the Exxon and he can hit me back. -- to do list.

Food/refreshments: zxappeal is supplying. -- Check.

Hey, if the motherfucker wants to help get this one kick-started, I'm totally game. I've been sittin' on this car for 10 years because I keep pushin' it into the background and I don't mind admitting to being totally inept when it comes to organization. And Ray's pretty damn good at that kind of thing. If I can return the favor somehow with his FC, I will. I've helped him out quite a bit with both of his FCs already.

So bring it on, motherfuckers. This shit is going down. Joel, that means you too, nigger.
