I work at McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville (Charlotte). We are hiring fresh graduates. They are also hiring summer interns. Summer intern program is the heat because they provide temporary housing in a nice place while you're here. Work week is 4 x 10's.

Description

Entry level mechanical engineers support safe, reliable, and economic nuclear plant operation within regulatory requirements. This job requires high individual motivation in a team-oriented environment. Individual work assignments will be based on the employee's educational background and Duke Energy business needs. Opportunities are available in either of the following work areas:

Modification Engineering

Responsibilities will include a lead role in development of design changes to mechanical plant systems and equipment requiring modification, upgrade, or replacement.
Generate Engineering Change packages by selecting and sizing mechanical equipment, estimating cost and developing design scope.
Manage engineering schedule milestones and budgets.
Provide mechanical modification support to station work groups (Operations, Chemistry, Radiation Protection, and Maintenance).
Originate and/or check calculations to support plant modifications.
Provide input for development of modification implementation and testing procedures.


Plant Engineering

Provide overall ownership and reliability of assigned mechanical systems, programs and equipment.
Provide mechanical engineering support to station work groups (Operations, Chemistry, Radiation Protection, and Maintenance) through testing, procedure development and configuration management.
Responsible for understanding/maintaining the system(s)/equipment design basis and performing and/or checking calculations to support that basis.
Perform problem resolution, cause analysis, operability determinations and corrective action implementation.
Perform Engineering Support Program activities such as monitoring, trending, developing periodic health reports, long range planning, maintaining Engineering Support Documents, calculation reviews and conducting plant walk downs.
Champion short or long-term projects to improve system/component reliability
Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful candidate, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.


Qualifications
Basic Qualifications

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office and computer analysis programs.
Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize and set work priorities.

Desired Qualifications

Masters Degree in engineering related program
Co-op or summer student experience at a nuclear utility, vendor, or contractor.
Summer Intern or Co-op experience at Duke Energy
Engineering Fundamentals Certification.
Demonstrated technical writing skills.
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated leadership ability.
Demonstrated academic excellence
Strong desire to work in the nuclear power industry

Specific Requirements

Must qualify and meet requirements for nuclear station unescorted access/security clearance.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
Must be able to pass required Engineering Training requirements.

Working Conditions

Office and plant environment - requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, occasional exposure to temperature, noise, and radiation.
Highly procedural and process-oriented structure due to strict regulatory requirements.
Must be able to work some weekends, holidays, overtime, and call-outs as needed to support plant maintenance outages and emergent problems.
Some "on-call" duty responsibilities may apply.

"Nuclear Department Engineering Internship" Just about every intern engineer job is available through that one ID. Most always interns get full time offers after graduation.

it's not like it's a ton of radiation. i work at a nuke plant, a pwr, and have recieved about 30 mrem in addition to the normal dose every human receives of about 360mrem/year.

^We don't do much construction these days except for the new plant being built in SC. Civil guys are welcome though. Would probably be associated more with modifications and major projects.
