I have two windows machines in two different places. One here in Raleigh and another in Boone. What I want is that every time I add a file to my Music folder or my Pictures folder in Raleigh it will copy it to the other machine in Boone. This is for the in-laws so I need something that I can set it and forget it.
Anyone ever come across a program for this and used it with any success? Any recommendations? 12/19/2007 8:55:20 PM |

can you setup folder sharing, add to my network places (or map), then use SyncToy? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx

Just ran across this myself. Looks like a good solution. Just need to figure a way to make a solid connection between the two computers. 12/19/2007 9:41:59 PM |

I actually use a utility called cwRsync, which is a package that includes the cygwin version of rsync and a version of SSL. It comes with a client/ssh-server, so you can set up your computers as you want.
Basically I have a backup computer that just keeps backup copies of all my stuff. I have a cron utility (pycron, not windows task scheduler) to run a one-way sync of all the data on my personal computers to this backup computer. It can be a little tricky to setup, but once it's up and running, I haven't had to touch a thing in over 2 years. I sometimes even forget that it's running.
For my laptop (a powerbook), I want it to backup regardless of whether I'm at home or on travel, so I have it connect through Hamachi.
The power tool looks pretty slick. I might play with it.

For that, use Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc)]12/20/2007 6:44:03 AM |

Thanks for the input - I am going the Hamachi/SyncToy route.
One quick question: With Hamachi - once I create a network with a password - no one can get in it unless I give them the password correct?
Just as an fyi - also read on the MS newsgroups about a log output program that will publish the log to the web so I can keep an eye on it. Pretty cool. http://swiftys.org.uk/cgi-bin/synctoy.rex 12/20/2007 9:41:35 AM |

Hamachi FTMFW.
The only frustrating thing is not being able to use Hamachi direct from public computers ... but then, I guess that's why I have an SSH server that I can use to route myself through to my Hamachi network 12/20/2007 10:56:11 AM |
