I've been recording my TV onto my computer for a while.

Type of file: Microsoft Recorded TV Show (.dvr-ms)



anybody found a free way of converting these to .avi/.mpeg/.wmv/.wma ... file types?

What O/S or media center edition are you using?

windows media encoder will convert those to wmv.

actually i just tried that and it says i'm missing codecs. i have the klite pack of codecs installed and there's a lot in it.

my stats:

OS: Vista home 32 bit
Media Center Edition Version: 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)

You may have corrupted or extremely out-dated codecs. I'm sure you downloaded the latest availible k-lite codec pack, but I've had issues with that one myself before and have friends who've also had some problems with it. Whenever possible, it's best to download codecs from the official site for them.

Still, that's probably not your problem here. Almost all the tools out there don't officially support Vista. I found one that is supposed to. I never heard of it so I ran AVG and Symantec virus scans on it first- seems clean. Still, you may want to research the company a little.

Free Mpeg-2 decoder. This might actually fix the problem you're having with the media converter you're already using. Longshot though.

That decoder says it can handle vista media-center recorded DVR-MS files. Don't think it actually does any of the conversion itself, but it's possible the problems you're having are because you don't have an mpeg2 decoder capable of handling DVR-ms files. Yeah I'm grasping for straws at this point.

Also, the DVR toolbox link you followed earlier doesn't seem to have the Vista version on there or any of the updated versions anyways:

That's a vista version of it. It's clunky and slowish but it's SUPPOSED to work. Sorry you're having a bitch of a time with all this.

Assuming you have an mpeg2 decoder and the file is not copyright protected you should be able to re-encode these no problem using windows media encoder. In fact, other than the mpeg2 decoder, you dont need any 3rd party codecs.
