Didn't file a police report (stupid I know). I dunno what I was thinking.

He merged into me (he was changing lanes - I was moving forward at <1mph), I dinged his rear passenger door (on the side opposite of the door handle near the hinges - door function is fine).

There are just scratches on my bumper, his rear door is dinged in.

What are the likely scenarios with my insurance?
Can you file a police report after the fact?

I forget what the $ limit is before my insurance goes up.

If it is determined to be your fault, I think it's one insurance point if it's more than $1000 in damages and a max of 3 points for more than $3800 of damage. 3 points on your insurance is a 65% increase in your rates.

I'm not positive it's the same way in North Carolina, but I once had a fender bender on my way to the airport in Georgia and didn't have time to call the cops, so I filed one when I got back. You have to go to the police station and then it's pretty much the same things they ask you if you'd filed it at the scene. Not sure what time limit you have to file, but I did mine 3 days later.
