I have a '98 ford escort 5 spd with 210,000 miles on it and I just replaced both the water pump and the thermostat at the end of April.

Around Christmas it started mysteriously losing coolant and I've noticed that the temperature guage on the dash fluctuates a whole lot more now depending on what i'm doing. If i'm on the highway going 50+ it pretty much sits on cold (way below where it used to normally sit), but if i'm in stop and go traffic it will go up much higher to about the halfway point. Used to it stayed in pretty much in the same place once the car had warmed up.

Anyone got any ideas about what could be causing this?
