My 2002 Jetta 1.8T seems to shake a lot on cold mornings and then recently the check engine light has been coming on. I took it to the VW dealership when it was under warranty and they kept saying no fault found. Since then I took it to my mechanic back home (which is about 2 hours away) and he said it had a bad temperature sensor which made sense cause it was also flashing the temp light. Well I drove it this weekend after having that replaced and it seems to be doing the shaking again and the check engine light came back on. So, if anybody knows a good mechanic in the Raleigh/Cary area that will work on Volkswagens that would be extremely helpful.

Had a guy at beethead's shop scan the codes, he said it was reporting some random misfires and misfires on 1, 2 & 3 so I'm gonna try changing the spark plugs and see if that might take care of it.

^The guy I saw at your shop said might be the coil packs too. He also suggested not using copper plugs. Other than them maybe not lasting as long is there any other downside to using copper ones?

no. copper is good they just dont last very long. lots of ppl have good luck with iridiums (BKR6EIX).. to give you an idea, most people will change them every other oil change on a chipped 1.8t..

also, very important:
Tightening torque 30Nm (22 ft-lb)

could be coilpacks (not uncommon for them to fail), but is it cold start only or what? or does it do it all the time?

Three bad coil packs at the same time would be pretty weird though.

There is a TSB for the 1.8t for a reflash. Problems are rough cold start and misfire codes.
There is an updated software flash that changes parameters of the Secondary Air injection.
It's worth a shot. My car was/is doing this, and I will be heading to the dealership for the reflash shortly.

^^^Yeah, its only on cold starts, once the engine warms up its fine.

^That kinda sounds like the problem I'm having... does it turn on the check engine light too? I don't really know anything about cars, I'm a computer guy, so what is a TSB? Is that just reflashing the car's computer? Also, does the dealership charge for that?

the misfire he mentioned will turn the CEL on and give the same codes you are seeing (misfire)

TSB is technical service bulletin..

i dont know if the dealer will charge for something like this.. you may want to call their service dept and ask..

The problem may just be the reflash but with over 80K miles on the original plugs and I suggested taking care of some basic maintenance/tuneup items and going from there. TJB627 the TSB you will want to mention to Patrick(service writer) at SSVW in Raleigh is 0106-26. According to the latest information I have that TSB is up to date. I could not find anything newer that was relevant. Hope this helps.

If I try to get somebody to flash it, it will probably be Leith VW in Cary since I work right next to there. So I should mention that number and they'll know what I'm talkin about?

I called Leith's service dept. I told them about the TSB and what was going on and they wanted to charge me a $79.95 diag fee to troubleshoot the check engine light which basically means they'd do the same thing fordhack did the other night. Is the dealership the only place I can get that flashed?

Just had the same problem with my '01 Passat and girlfriends '03 A4. They had problems with the coil packs that year so you may want to check that out. I had to change at least one coil on both cars. I found out about the recall too late for mine, and her serial number fell just outside the recall (big surprise). Here is a link to an article on the recall. May want to give VW a call and see if they will replace them for you.

coilpack failure is usually not usually isolated to cold starts

its totally feasible, tho. those things suck.

i dont see that recall on 2002s, that article makes it sound like the recall will happen in the future. if its coilpacks, buy some hitachis (i know someone that has 'em in stock ) and call it a day.
