What do you mean by meal replacement? Because when I think meal replacement, I'm thinking Met-RX, Lean Body, ISS brand, and stuff like that.... Which are primarily whey protein, vitamins, and aren't necessarily *supposed* to taste good. Though some do.
Or, are you talking about those little canned drinks you buy at the grocery store (Slim Fast, Atkins, South Beach) branded with fad-diet names? Some of those aren't bad but as I warned a girl in my morning Psych class, just because it has one of those major names stamped on it doesn't mean its good for you or your diet. 1/10/2008 12:14:06 PM |

meal replacement or slim-fast shakes, whatever, i dont really care so long as it doesn't taste awful. Im just looking for something i can grab when im running late, doing errands, the like and dont have time to get a meal. I like the met-rx bars... pretty much all of them. But the taste and "chewyness"/density of the bar may take some getting used to.
If you are using that kind of bar or shake make sure you keep track of the calories. Some of them are loaded. So you may need to adjust your other meals accordingly.
As far as feeling full goes try to find something high in fiber and/or fat (mono and poly-unsaturated). These will both make you feel fuller longer than other nutrients. 1/10/2008 12:37:21 PM |

I second the ensure, although I prefer vanilla. You can get high-protein or high-calcium too.
It certainly isn't something I'd grab because it just tastes THAT good, however, its nice to have SOMETHING to drink when you're running late. As for keeping me full for hours...lol...I can eat a Thanksgiving meal and be hungry in 30 minutes...so... 1/10/2008 12:59:18 PM |

Muscle Milk Light - I've tried the Mint Chocolate, yummy! Adkins Advantage Shakes - Cafe Caramel is really good, I didn't really care for the Strawberry. AchieveOne - If you can find these in stores, I've heard they're REALLY good. They're coffee flavored (cappuccino, hazelnut, vanilla) but not sold very many places. You can order them online, but shipping is expensive (they're in glass bottles).
I've never had Ensure or Slim Fasts, but my two cents on any sort of meal replacement shake - make sure the protein is high and the carbs are lower. Protein is going to be what keeps you fuller longer.
I drink Instant Breakfast sometimes too, but the no sugar added one only has 5g of protein, but 12 carbs. With 8oz of milk, that's 24g carbs and 13g protein.
If I think of any others, I'll add them here. I just had gastric bypass surgery, and protein shakes/meal replacements are sort of a necessity early on. 1/10/2008 1:08:37 PM |

GNC is overpriced. If you want to buy it locally, then go to Vitamin Shoppe in Cary at Crossroads. I always order it online since I tend to buy a couple tubs at a time. The Rocky Road is my favorite, as it even tastes good mixed with water. They also have a lot of other good flavors. I'm going to try the cookies n' creme this weekend for the first time, since I've heard such good things about it.

I don't know whether it matters to you or not but most of those prepackaged shakes (muscle milk, ensure, atkins) are packed with fat (considering the volume of the "meal") if you are trying to reduce fats especially saturated fats then just check the label before you buy. 1/10/2008 1:28:51 PM |

^^ yah i was kinda worried about that because i kinda am on a diet, and i use that phrase lightly because i really dont believe in diets so much as i do moderation and exercise. When i was in middle/ high school i used to drink slim-fast for b-fast everyday because mom would bug out if i didn't eat anything (im not a big breakfast fan). Depending on the type of sugar, and when you are consuming them, sugars in a shake are actually optimal. And as said earlier, premade shakes are generally shit.

ehh... my understanding is that simple sugars (mostly glucose) right after or during a workout are good because your blood sugar (glucose) lowers. But other than that I don't know that there is any other time they're truly optimal. And it doesn't seem like she wants this for any other reason than something quick to eat on her way out the door or mid-day. Blood sugar regulation is important when it comes to weight management so increasing it when it's low is good. But jacking it up just because you're not paying attention to what makes up the stuff you eat can be bad.
The common usage of "diet" means "i'm trying to lose weight". personally if I say "i'm dieting" (meaning i'm paying close attention to what i consume) it could mean i'm eating to put on weight, build muscle, lose weight, etc.. Or it could just be something like "What's your diet like?" (think doctor's office), which just means what are you eating day to day. But I almost always explain my intent after I tell someone I'm on a specific diet for the simple reason that the average person doesn't consider the true definition, they just assume you're trying to lose weight... where as some realize it is just what you eat.
I think she was saying she doesn't believe that a calorie restriction diet is best way to lose weight, but rather to not over indulge and increase exercise. I don't necessarily agree with this, I would adjust calorie intake according to my goals along with adjustments to my exercise routine.1/10/2008 4:28:17 PM |

I drink Slim Fast vanilla or chocolate probably 5 days per week for breakfast and sometimes I'll drink one to hold me over when I know I can't get dinner until really late. It's pretty cheap...Like 24 drinks for $20 at Sam's Club. I seriously drank over 250 of those things in 2007. They're pretty good. I usually have some fruit with it though.

BOOST tastes the best, a lot better than ENSURE.
I sometimes used to drink their high-protein ones.
(I am only listing the best from the big nutrition/pharma companies. I don't have any idea about the ones produced by bodybuilding/fitness supplement companies, like EAS, MusleTech, etc)

Then say goodbye to your diet. Those who eat breakfast are leaner, healthier, smarter, and more energetic than those who don't. Even if the breakfast is unhealthy. Many studies have backed that up.

Muscle Milk is good if you're exercising and reducing carbs (or doing low glycemic index) and the chocolate flavor is pretty tasty. However, it's not good if your goal is low fat.
Many meal replacement drinks are so high in sugar you may as well have a Pop Tart for brekkie.

Fat consumed doens't equal fat on you. Fats are essential to a healthy diet, especially omega 3's etc.

Yeah forgot to mention, have some yoghurt or cheese (or nuts) with that breakfast, but depending on how much oats you prepare, and how much milk you add to them, you could end up getting 15 grams of protein, which is enough for an average sized girl.

I don't know what kind of oats you make, but it works for me. I end up getting around 20-25 grams protein (oats+glass of drinking yogurt), 10-15 grams fiber, 10-15 grams good fat, 10-15 grams sugar (from fruits and/or honey) and about 50-70 grams complex carbs. That's a very good breakfast, nutritionally speaking. Not to mention, it tastes heavenly, and keeps me full for a long time.
Maybe both of you are huge....
Barley has been shown to modulate blood sugar levels upto 10 hours after consuming it, much longer than oats or any other grain Which means you could eat barley for breakfast, and it would control your blood sugar levels maybe even upto dinner time!!! Talk about a perfect food for staying full, energized, and/or weight loss.

what kind of fruit are you eating with your oatmeal, half an orange? If you added a small serving of raisins or dried cranberries to your oatmeal, you'd be adding closer to 30-50 grams of sugar.
