i thought it was ok to create a new thread every time someone had a question about the PS3?
so...
answer my question then let the thread die.1/11/2008 2:07:04 PM |

its fine with HDMI, if you have a surround sound setup youve gotta get autio to the surround sound somehow, so you optical.
cable is like $20, prolly cheaper online

hmm, i would just say optical because its much cheaper. unless you have an extra cable. 1/11/2008 2:21:16 PM |

just play the good nerd role Mark and do whatever is most expensive or difficult and then post about it later 1/11/2008 2:23:04 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
the nerd role would be the cheapest and most complex way to do it. With a home made HDMI or optical cable.

HDMI for loss less optical otherwise
99% of the time you might as well go optical.... unless you're a bat with over $2000 in speakers 1/11/2008 2:50:18 PM |

HDMI would be better I guess then. 1/11/2008 2:54:35 PM |

Is this a real thread or even a real question? I can't imagine that it is. If you have HDMI already running to your A/V receiver, why the hell would you even consider using optical for anything at that point? Someone lock this shit. 1/11/2008 2:54:40 PM |

cause optical has a cool red light. 1/11/2008 2:55:08 PM |

wait, the ps3 has one hdmi port. unless you are using 5way components for your video i dont think there is a way you can use 2 hdmis. if there is lemme know.
hdmi from ps3 to TV and optical from ps3 to receiver

HDMI -> receiver -> HDMI -> tv
the receiver takes both the video and audio of the PS3 from the HDMI and outputs the audio to the speakers (duh) and the video to the TV. I don't run anything directly to my TV. Everything goes into the receiver.

Assuming everything's HDMI 1.3, use HDMI.
Actually, you should probably just use HDMI regardless. 1/11/2008 5:09:59 PM |

werd. yeah this is my first setup, i should look into hooking everything up to the reciever.
currently there is cable box component cables and ps3 hooked up to the tv.
i think thats ok for now.1/11/2008 5:40:35 PM |

shit, i had found a excellent website explaining all of the audio codecs, ac3, pcm, true HD, etc, and the corresponding audio connections. basically the compressed audio means it clips out parts of the sound your speakers are more than likely not capable of reproducing, much less of you hearing, espcially if you've been to any kind of concert ever

It's not a real question. Golovko knows better, he's just being patronizing here.
But in case anyone is wondering, with a PS3's Optical, you can either have 2-channel LPCM, or 5.1 DTS. There's not enough bandwidth for 5-channel LPCM. This isn't a problem if your receiver has HDMI ports -- however you have to make sure that your receiver will actually decode the audio going through on the HDMI, rather than just ignore it and function as a pass-through switch. Specs on receivers are notoriously vague on this, but you can probably ask someone to confirm it on avsforums.1/12/2008 1:20:20 AM |
