lots of miles, but even if engine goes out in 20-50k, just parts alone it is worth more than this price

Mileage seems high. I'm sure the body is not as taut is it once was, some 100k ago.

you've got to be an optimist to expect 20-50 more miles from any major mechanical piece on that car, much less 20,000-50,000. we're not talking about a 45 yr. old single cat lady's toyota corolla, that car has no doubt earned every single one of those miles. i don't care if it's got a stack maintenance records that resembles the thickness of an urban phone book.

i mean, maybe it's a deal if boasting about owning the highest mileage m5 in existance is your thing.

i will concede that the e38/e39 v8 cars are probably my favorite bmw's though.

I looked at a 140k mile one owner car, asking $18k last week. Miles wouldn't scare me, except for resale.

No way in hell I'd buy that M5 for anywhere near that price.

...and I love M-cars.

There is no reason why properly maintained BMW (or any other decent quality car) should not go 300k and maybe even more. Car is not that high strung, at least nowhere near the level of E46 M3. There are almost no major recalls or history of problematic components on E39 M5, unlike on other M-cars (e36 suspension, cooling, e46 rod bearing, control arms..bla bla bla). Only thing is ’99-01 had a slightly higher oil consumption than post ’02 models and that’s about it.

Anyhow, for all I know this car could blow in next 100 miles, it is always a gamble at that mileage, but if it was documented and properly maintained I think the risk is acceptable, at least for that price.

Ahmet,

I live in CT now…there are about 3-4 E39 M5s within 50 miles of me with ~ 75-110k anywhere from $17k-22k, which is fairly reasonable. All on autotrader.
