with my hands, duh just dont finger the shifter too hard, she gets antsy in the pantsy
but really, if I was financially secure, I'd do it if I only planned on keeping it a few years.

i have a 98 (earlier body style)
a friend of mine got a B6 (02 maybe) A4 1.8tq avant (wagon).. its a nice ride.. decent car, but somewhat underpowered from the factory, esp. in the avant... pretty much the same car, tho and its very nice.

everything i read says they're actually fairly reliable cars, although i assume like anything "foreign" if it breaks, its expensive.
i love how that body style looks and especially the interior 1/15/2008 2:48:06 PM |
beethead All American 6513 Posts user info edit post |
if any car breaks its usually expensive.. this car is definitely no different. 1/15/2008 2:54:15 PM |

yeah but generally a foreign branded car is going to be more expensive parts wise than domestic...just as a general rule of thumb 1/15/2008 2:58:23 PM |

maybe a little.. but the most expensive part of getting a car fixed is usually the labor.. unless you do it yourself.. 1/15/2008 3:10:00 PM |

jnpaul has a 99 A4 1.8T auto which has a bunch of expensive sensors that are messed up, (ABS and shit), headliner's starting to sag slightly, and other little nagging things. That's with I think 100k on the clock, but it still drives decently. A friend of mine has 90k on his '03 A4 (5 speed 1.8T) and I don't think he's had that many problems. I think that generation was more reliable in general, or maybe he was just an exception. I've driven both cars and I definately like the later one better, but part of that might be because it is a 5 speed.
Only thing I don't like about those cars is the cramped back seat. With the 5 speed that generation of A4 is still pretty slow with an unchipped 1.8T but it feels torquey and responsive anyway. I'd go for it if you get a good deal.

the b5 had a good deal of problems... abs controller, turbos (wastegate), control arms, etc...
seems like they worked out a lot of the kinks with the b6 1/16/2008 2:34:54 AM |

im afraid my a6 is going to need $texas soon. invalid MPG, MPH readings, no cruise, and lower than avg miles/tank.
i rly need to buy that rosstech software 1/16/2008 10:45:02 AM |

i will not ride in the back seat of these cars... way too cramped.1/16/2008 10:57:15 AM |

Nice looking car, well built, somewhat lackluster engine compared to other vehicles in it's class when fitted with the 1.8T (as opposed to the 3.0 available that same year). If it's still in good shape I'd say go ahead and get it if you aren't an aggressive driver. Oh, and Quattro or FWD?
Audi's are nice cars, good looking, German, but if that's what you want I'd also consider looking at the 3-series. For about the same price (presumably 15-17k) you can get a 2002 or 2003 BMW. I'm not saying take the Bimmer, but at least give it a look and compare the two.

its very easy to get more out of the 1.8t..
[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 11:13 AM. Reason : i would never buy an audi without quattro] 1/16/2008 11:12:42 AM |

nah i dont really like 3 series bimmers
i have just kind of fallen in love with the A4, and im in a situation where i dont NEED a car at all, and would rarely drive it except out of town and occasionally around, but if i do end up buying another car i think this is what ill be getting
thet 1.8t serves me better mpg wise and i would want the quattro because previously ive only owned 4wd suvs and like the luxury/utility for snow, which is more of a problem where i live now than it was in raleigh. 1/16/2008 11:18:55 AM |

Oh sure, you can pump the 1.8T up to damn near 300 HP without too much effort or money, and I wouldn't buy an Audi without Quattro either, but some people did and he's buying used which is why I was asking. 1/16/2008 11:20:20 AM |

i should add, i was additionally looking at a Volvo S40, but everything ive read indicates that they are much more of money pits than the A4 1/16/2008 11:23:51 AM |

300hp will take some money... 250bhp is significantly easier.. 250btq is very easy.. 1/16/2008 12:03:30 PM |

everyone says that about every car they either owned that broke bad on them or everything but the car they own.
im just going by research and by reliablility surveys/reviews online...apparently, 04 was a really good year for this car. 1/17/2008 11:56:23 AM |
